We emailed the below message today (Tuesday, July 24) to all members. All feedback welcome.

------------------

We're happy (and a bit nervous...) to announce that within the next 2 weeks, GenevaOnline.ch will officially become Glocals.com (a combination of Global+Local) following months of discussions & surveys.

Starting tomorrow, as preparation for this name change, emails from us will appear as coming from "GenevaOnline / Glocals.com".

Here's 4 quick things about the name change.

1. Why we're changing the site's name
Because we plan to expand into Lausanne , Zurich , Bern & Basel, and a Geneva focused name doesn't fly in those cities.

2. Why we chose 'Glocals.com'
We asked members for name ideas, and then asked members to vote for their favorite. Glocals.com came in first (see survey results). We're aware not all members love it, and we're a bit nervous about it as well...

3. What will happen to GenevaOnline.ch once we change the name?
When you type www.genevaonline.ch, you will get to the Glocals.com site. The site (and GoL spirit) don't change.

4. What will change?
A new logo (see it), a new URL (Glocals.com), and a new address that our Emails will be sent from ("GenevaOnline / Glocals.com").

Thanks, all feedback welcome...

The GenevaOnline/Glocals.com Gang

...the bit in the email that you sent out to everyone saying:

"Evolving from being a "GoLer" into being a "Glocal" ain't easy.
Please help us by being open to the new name, and by practising saying 'Glocals.com' until it sounds just right..:-)"

The second line really made me laugh! ;-D J.

hard to pronounce, not the best, but it was hard to find a name, I know for giving bad suggestions myself!
Now we just have to get used to it. Starting tonight, brainwashing myself, thinking I am meeting up with other glocals and not golers. I am sure they will be as nice and fun as usual!!!!!!
It is not the name that matters, it's the spirit.
tinkie, in the glocal mood :-)

Glocal doesn't do it for me (glauque in French is not a positive expression). I'm really not bothered about what's happening on a regular basis in Zurich and Basle...! Lausanne, perhaps. I just want to know about the Geneva area - I can see I'll have to wade through blurb from people partying in Zurich before finding something good in to do on a Tuesday in Geneva.

Hey, what's wrong with keepin things local? First WRG, now GenevaOnline... If it ain't broken, why try to mend it?

This annoying reference of *Glocal* to the French word "glauque" is annoying.

Firstly, this is (not solely, but) primarily an anglophone website. Unless I've misunderstood (and I used to live in Geneva when I joined GOL by the way), the objective now is to have this wonderful tool, which makes life better for people coming to Switzerland, expand to other parts of Switzerland. Nobody outside the French speaking part of CH (nor in other non-speaking countries, if and when it were to expand there too) will ever make the connection between Glocal and "glauque"! In fact, the Swiss Germans are likely to pronounce it as Glo-cAAL!

Incidentally, I noted (funnily enough) that mostly "foreigners" who speak French, are complaining about this association! And there are many Romands who are members on this site already, not many of whom have piped up with this silly complaint.

If you don't like it, it's your loss for not having put in a vote when you could/should have voted against it, when it was still possible.

I was following the voting from the start, and contributed mine. I did not vote for Glocal, but also noted that, of the 10,000 members online at the time, only a few hundred actually voted, no?

So where was your vote then?

Too late. Accept change. And Glocals, is that new change.

Well done and many thanks to Oded, Nir et al for giving us the choice in the first place, and managing the end result.

Hi Roberta!
I would not say that foreigners speaking french "complain" about the new website name.
They notice that it sounds like the french word "glauque". And what !? It's the truth. It's not only to criticize the result of months of discussion about that new name.
I noticed it, and some of my friends, french and swiss romand, noticed it as well. I don't doubt it sounds perfectly with other languages than french.
LOCAL people give their feeling. Too late you think? It's another discussion.
Anyway! We'll live with it, don't worry Roberta! And above all, don't worry the GolGang (sorry I can't use the new name yet ;-))!
Cheers
Steph
