finding a place not too expensive, hiking, pointers?

I am looking for a place for a month or two and not wanting to spend to much. I will be starting at EPFL in the fall, and am in Geneva now. I saw the first $25 hamburger in my life and involuntarily scoffed. Well it did come with fries. Perhaps I could trade English or something? I would like to be working on some things with WIFI on the Internet, but if I can't find anything soon, I'm going to have to take my back pack and go hiking. Perhaps I'll go for a walk on the French side of the lake. Any pointers?
