Hi!

There are many many small shops in Switzerland, which have their own chocolate, so there is a lot to try :)

From what you get in the supermarket I'd choose Lindor or Minor. Black chocolate only without any sugar and more than 72% cacao also from Lindt.

Ciao.

I am surprised no one mentioned Frey Chocolate collection Supreme! They are wonderful. Next to Lindt, but less advertised. Try it.

Alprose 72% with almonds (or hazlenuts or plain, but the almond one is the best)! Chocolate doesn't get any better that! The only place that sells it in Geneva is Manor for some strange reason. I've become so addicted to it that I can't really enjoy any other dark chocolate anymore.

Excuse me? Who said that?  Hershey's superior to Swiss chocolate? Is this a joke?  Surprised

Anyway - time out - point of order - Arin asked about which Swiss brands were best.  Even in these days of globalisation, I don't think Hershey's qualifies for a mention.

Arin - just try them all before you leave - and be prepared to put on 10kg not just 5!  But it'll be fun!

If with "best" we are not just talking about the sensual experience of eating but also considering value for money, then there is surely only one winner. It's just part of a whole pantheon of quality, style and value!

What is your favorite swiss chocolate brand?

Your question has two key criteria : Swiss and Brand

My favorite Swiss brand is 'Lindt'

Here is list from wikipedia, i think is the main brands and not local 'chocolate shops' :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_chocolate

In the 19th and early-20th centuries the following chocolate factories were founded:

1819 - Cailler in Vevey (today Nestlé)
1826 - Suchard in Serrières (today Kraft Foods)
1830 - Kohler in Lausanne (today Nestlé)
1836 - Sprüngli in Zurich, company split into Confiserie Sprüngli and Lindt & Sprüngli in 1892
1852 - Maestrani in Luzern (today in Flawil)
1862 - Klaus in Le Locle
1867 - Peter in Lausanne (today Nestlé)
1879 - Lindt in Bern (today Lindt & Sprüngli)
1887 - Frey in Aarau (today Migros)
1899 - Tobler in Bern (today Kraft Foods)
1901 - Chocolat de Villars in Villars sur Glâne
1928 - Stella SA in Lugano (1987 Giubiasco)
1929 - Camille Bloch in Courtelary
1932 - Teuscher in a small town in the Swiss Alps
1932 - Bernrain in Kreuzlingen
1933 - Chocolats Halba in Wallisellen

I'm glad nobody suggested Toblerone (see video).

Personally I think Swiss chololate is OK, but Belgian chocolate is fantastic.Go to a place like Antwerp or Bruges, step into one of these little chocolate shops and fill up a little (or big) box. Or just get a pre-packed box of Neuhaus, Godiva or Leonidas at the airport.

Well there are alot diffrent chocolates but the question was not if therer are better cholcolates in 'Switzerland' but which brands are best. And several persons posting that Belgian or other are better, I dont agree. Further the question was which Swiss Chocolate brands are best. Not what countries chocolates are best. Because its like beer, Russions love there beer, Argentine love theres, Brits lov theres, french lov there, etc. And same with chocolate that Russians believe they have the best, Americans think waxy sugars chocolate is best, Belgian snail/shell shaped multi color chocolate is best, etc. So really it is each individulual preferences.

My favorite SWISS BRAND chcolate is Lindt & Sprüngli. They have many different choices for different tastes, and there quality is unmatched.

I've lived in both Zurich and Geneva and my favorite chocolate is from the Sprügli shops that you can find in Zurich.  A friend told me that you can find them in Bern but I recently traveled to Amsterdam and saw a Sprüngli shop at one of the terminals at the airport in Geneva.  The mixed box of truffes is always a hit and I couldn't go back to the states without their kirschstengli for my grandfather when I lived in Zurich.

The text you are quoting:

I've lived in both Zurich and Geneva and my favorite chocolate is from the Sprügli shops that you can find in Zurich.  A friend told me that you can find them in Bern but I recently traveled to Amsterdam and saw a Sprüngli shop at one of the terminals at the airport in Geneva.  The mixed box of truffes is always a hit and I couldn't go back to the states without their kirschstengli for my grandfather when I lived in Zurich.

Tristan's chocolate shop in Bougy-Villars between Geneva and Lausanne has a very good reputation.

Ah yes. I would agree that it's good. However, this is the shop that just before Christmas they seal off a 20 km radius around the shop with police and military presence not dissimilar to the cordon in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

People queue for 20 minutes to enter the shop with almost reverential awe before choosing some chocolate that has a value almost approaching that of platinum. But each to their own. Give me Cailler any old day of the week. Sealed
