Ha ha ha - very good Casuistik.
Michelle, when I first came to Lausanne,I couldn't get a job and the only people I met were housewives and au pairs.I was MASSIVELY bored. When I got a job I was very busy but I was still bored, socially and intellectually.......Switzerland was so dull after CentralLondon. But then I made friends, very slowly - no Glocals back then! -,and it all changed.
So,keep looking at Glocals events and, little by little you're bound to find loads of things to brighten up your life.
Good luck!

Claudia you need to come to Zurich.
Claudia you need to come to Zurich.
Carlos.. 100% agree
Zurich is a great place - a REAL city
Yeah! I do not like Switzerland.
Yeah! I do not like Switzerland.
I think most of us have had those sort of sentiments once upon a time or another. regardless, it won't make it any better not liking it ( I know its not as sunny as the southern countries ), but I've lived in more desolate places... get out there... there are some very kewl people and places to visit. FRom the responses to this thread, looks like people are asking in general to go and do stuff. I think it's a good recommendation.

Hi Claudia.
Moving is always hard. I also do not like some aspects of Zurich but what you do not like in Switzerland?
For me, it is not Switzerland. Every time i moved i had to start again: Friends, preferred spot on Sunday, activities.
It is always hard to meet new groups (there are always boring meetings, ppl not compatible with you at all).
I believe adaptation is all about people and not where you are.
I go Portugal every month and still a shock the differences between ppl.
For example, here in Zurich i found people think that people over 30..35 think they are too old to party...people under 25 too young to date.
So many rules.....so many plans...what i do? I meet more people :d
I hope you find your people and activities.
You are welcome to Zurich.

Check the activities posted...nothing you like doing? then brainstorm and post an activity idea you do like and work from that
The Backgammon group got started as people gradually through forum posts and its now going strong
People are willing to do things but sometimes you have to initiate it

VERY Bored this days I would love just go out!!!
by the way,I had thought of changing my profile intro sentence - but now I stand by it!
Still, take heart ,those of you who dislike this country;I hated it,really, for years and just longed to get back to London. But,once you find the place where you fit in(it can take some time!)it can even be good.
PS.If someone had told me this years ago,I would have dismissed them as being people with low expectations!

well, lets plan then for carnival. We can go to Luzern (heard they have a real good party there) , and then couple of days later again in Basel (or Zurich). Just need enough ppl, enough drinks so we show the Swiss how to party for real...
The Swiss only go crazy at new year and Fasnacht it seems.

For fooks sake people!!! Is this just one long winge about "living" in Switzerland - sounds like you're all "dying" of boredom, not "living".
I've said it before and I'll say it again - only BORING people get BORED.
Change your attitude, change your outlook and change your life. Only YOU can to do that, no-one else can do it for you.
Or just piss off back to where you came from and winge at "home".
Jeeeeez..........give me strength.....

Gotta learn to find fun people....
I can't believe people can be on Glocals and be bored... Unless they're just in front of their computer reading and replying to forums...
I will just say the same thing as others: join activities or post one!!! I do both on a regular basis and I just love it! I get to know a lot of fun people, but it is up to me in the first place to be friendly and social!!!!
It won't happen just by standing there.... The sky won't fall on you just by revelation.... You need to make it happen!!

I disagree on this - environments affect your psychology
place even the most non-boring person in a certain environment and they will find it dull

Switzerland is tiny and so whatever opportunities there are here are limited
I think the general consensus is that if you are not keen on winter sports and hiking the country is woefully lacking
Throw in the isolationist xenophobic natives and its not a good mix

yeah.... all around you... foreigners and locals alike.
After 11 years here I make new friends every year, loose some each year too (to relocation).
Locals are indeed hard eggs to crack, but, once you do theyre fun too.
In your own country would you expend alot of effort in getting to know some transient worker? prob not, since you'd mix with your buddies... the locals do that too.
Intergation anywhere takes effort.
No effort = boredom and lonelyness.
Simples.

the fact that people feel they have to make Herculean efforts is a true reflection of the Swiss and circumstances here
would i get to know some transient worker? yes because it shows you are human and not some snob looking down on others

keith P has a point - a dull environment can affect you psychologically.Remember,Switzerland is a place where people like to tow the line ,and not deviate from the norm. This can be very dull.
They also have high rates of alcoholism, drug addiction and suicide.....
What was was so much more exciting about where I came from?Ermmm....vibrant public debate about all kinds of issues, stimulating media, people with a great sense of humour, interesting political slanging matches,GREAT comedy, position of women much more advanced, variety of lifestyles and tolerance of what is out of the norm, etc etc.
It's fine if you're here socializing in an international environment - but then you're not really experiencing the real "Swiss thing" are you?.And,like someone said,it's great for people who like outdoor sports and that stuff. But,if you don't ski etc in winter and you aren't on Glocals....you're pretty well stuffed - It ain't a very exciting place.(I mean,Marie-Thérèse Porchet is a great national comic act....give me a break!)
Glocals is fun and there are loads of opportunities to do stuff.Or you might be lucky enough to find some people you fit well with. But Switzerland ITSELF has a reputation,at least in the UK,for being dull. There's no getting away from it.
Any place that is comfortable,well-organized and clean and likes people to conform is never going to be that exciting,is it?

Oh dear -i'm so sorry Myriam.I hope I haven't offended you.But this is not an easy country to get used to (and I have experienced others)
I appreciate many things about this country - otherwise I would never have decided to stay here when i was widowed. But,culturally and intellectually,I miss many things.

Going just by the last 4 photos, the Scots, the Irish and the Swiss seem to be having a whale of a time. Maybe it's just the English (that's an observation btw, not a xenophobism!)

If you look back through the threads of Glocals and "GOL" as it was before, you'll find every year around this time people say how boring it is here.
Inevitably those people who proclaimed boredom to the point of almost suicide are not here any more...
And life "ANYWHERE" is what you make of it... so if youre bored, do something, if you dont then you ONLY have yourself to blame.

Hi Daniela,
I just had my first ski lesson(2nd in 4 years) at Vallon de Villard near Chamby(sur Montreux). I am a complete beginner and I found this place to be perfect for me. There were just 2 people on the slope including me on this Sunday and the ski lift(its small) costs 3 francs for the whole day!
Let me know if you need more details of the ski school etc.
Regards,
Suleman

Tracey, you're not the one who offended me....
I'm the first one to say that I have a hard time making friends with Swiss people, even though I lived all my childhood and teenagehood here. But please, don't put all the Swiss in the same package, as if all black people were the same, or all chinese..... There are some things about the culture that relates all people from a country, but we all have a chance to be different from each other, for the best or for the worse!!!!!!
I feel very different from the Swiss people, and I'm very proud of it... But I feel proud to be Swiss in a lot of different ways. We have a beautiful country. A lot of people would love to come here, so..... why don't the people who complain just leave this place and give these other persons some room to live here?????
Just joking......... AHAHAHAHAHA

Well, the best way is to meet up at a bar and discuss it ...
The perfect country doesnt exist, and its better to invest energy in meeting ppl than complaining about the other youre not meeting, so lets stay positive.
You cant expect to find a place with ánd safety, ánd well paid, ánd close to a beach ánd pretty girls ánd parties every day. Unless we are talking about Perth, Australia, of course
Im new here, but I think the Glocals Groups is a good thing to focus on. Similar to Couchsurfing people of a same interest group can receive emails when there is an event.
I love going to bars, discos, in Basel, or over the border in France or Germany, or Zurich, ...but dont ask me to go see a museum. So i dont fit for all events here.
So me or a more senior Glocal should start the Basel party group. Then after meeting up (weekly, what else?) later even the Basel party members can meet up with the Zurich Party group and vice versa etc... And those who think zurich is "too far", are maybe more boring than they realize :) hehe

Im not bored, but would like to meet new people, as I just moved to Switzerlan 1 week ago
I like it very much :) Really nice place. So if anyone up for doing something for this weekend, let me know. I live in Lully, about 12 km from Lasusanne.

But,like I said before, being stuck with housewives and au pairs back inna'day,i longed to find women who aspired to something more than finding the perfect table decoration or the ultimate party shoes.Luckily, things have moved on a lot since those days - and thankfully Glocals provides many ways to explore other things!
This is still a pretty conservative society - and some people might still find it tough until they find their niche. But don't lose hope!
"You cant expect to find a place with ánd safety, ánd well paid, ánd close to a beach ánd pretty girls ánd parties every day. Unless we are talking about Perth, Australia, of course

Im not bored, but would like to meet new people, as I just moved to Switzerlan 1 week ago
I like it very much :) Really nice place. So if anyone up for doing something for this weekend, let me know. I live in Lully, about 12 km from Lasusanne.
Hi! There are a few things going on this week end, both Friday and Saturday. I might also add an event on Saturday night, so check all the things to do in Lausanne and I'm sure you'll find something fun to do! But it is true that it takes guts to go to a place where you don't know anybody and start socializing.... I did it many times, here and in a lot of places in the world, and I don't regret it, I met great people everywhere! (and not so great, but it's ok...:-).

The only "problem" with the Swiss is that they're not all like Myriam!
Although maybe that's a good thing - if they were, we'd all be out singing Karaoke, ice skating and partying all night long and would never get ANY work done.
Then again.....
Seriously, thanks for all your optimism, enthusiasm and for being such a wonderful ambassador for all that is Swiss - you're great fun to be around and we all love your company.
Keep flying the flag!

Hi Daniela,
I just had my first ski lesson(2nd in 4 years) at Vallon de Villard near Chamby(sur Montreux). I am a complete beginner and I found this place to be perfect for me. There were just 2 people on the slope including me on this Sunday and the ski lift(its small) costs 3 francs for the whole day!
Let me know if you need more details of the ski school etc.
Regards,
Suleman
3 FRANCS???:-?Are you joking??

yours is not bad tooo CAROLYN!!!;)
Yep - he was ripped off good and proper.

No its really 3 francs
For the lessons it was 60 francs for 1 hour. Its the same if there are 2 people for the lesson too.
The only downside is the place is at a quite low altitude so one has to wait for some good snowfall. Upside is HUGE, closeby(less time and money for travel),cheap(compared to the daily ski lift pass, plus one can go home for lunch and come back again
), less crowded(When I had my first lesson in Samoen(France) I was afraid I would bump into other people and cause them injury etc, but here as there are no people around, I am relaxed and it helped me a lot)
The school is called ESS Montreux and my teacher's name was Jean Christophe, he was good in my opinion.
All the best and see you on the slope!
Ciao,
Suleman

so, keith, snobish behaviour is not allowed, but racist comments are?
wierd.
Racism imho is when a person expresses prejudice due to skin colour
The post was partially tongue in cheek
I may be a lot of bad things but I am not racist

AHAHAHAHAHA
"why don't the people who complain just leave this place"
several reasons
tied to contracts
reluctant partner

I've moved locations (homes) many times in the last 20 years , and have always foud the same to be true - in a new community most people have established their lives, friends, families, interests, and whilst they may be welcoming initially, they soon forget you are new and fall into thinking that you too have an 'establshed' lifestyle and no longer need them to make an effort. Here in Switzerland I think we are in a specific situation where there are large numbers of people for whom that's not the case. And that makes us lucky to be able to come together and socialise with others in similar situations.
So lets support each other in finding our own networks, no need to discriminate between expats, Swiss or those who have moved here permanently. If sites such as glocals can help that , surely its only a good thing.
If you expect people to make an effort to welcome you, you have to be prepared to do the same and accept some differences in opinion or interests. And its not easy in a new place.

Man with humour.... rare!
A decided 'you' quote
I moved here in September. After the excitement of finding a flat (day 3), settling in to work, going to a wine tasting hike near Montreux (day 11), going to Paris on a cheap flight (day 17)... settling into flat, great conversations with colleagues at lunch and at coffee break, meeting neighbours and being invited to their flats for dinner, going to Munich, visiting Gruyere, Christmas market in Interlaken, going skiing with people from another forum, having dinner with other glocals, cross border shopping in France/Germany/Italy
I miss friends and family, but with email, video chats and voice over ip it is so much better than letters and cassettes that we used to exchange in the bad old days. But that melancholy is not the same as boredom Well just to say that the boredom has not caught up with me.
But I am new here, or perhaps I have low expectations.
