Breathalyzer in car required

Hi all, my wife received the following information from her firms HR dept.

We would like to inform you that as of 1st July 2012, it will be mandatory for any driver in France to carry an alcohol breathalyser test kit in their car. The French Government is introducing this obligation in a bid to raise awareness of the dangers of drink-driving.

The alcohol test, which is relatively inexpensive, is a simple device made up of a tube and bag, which indicates whether a person is safe to drive a car or not.

Motorists in France are already obliged to have a warning triangle and fluorescent safety vest with them at all times and, from November 2012, French Police will begin fining anybody who is caught without a breathalyser test in their car.

Is this true and where would I get one of these units .??

Yes, it's true. The easiest and cheapest is probably to get simple ones from the pharmacy.

I think the fine is 11€ if you get caught without the breathalyser.

You can buy them as well from the TCS stores in CH (i.e. Geneva and Lausanne have stores).

If you are a TCS member they are CHF 1.80. From memory, they are about another Franc more expensive if you are not a member.

The Lausanne store is in the Metropole 2000 downtown and the Geneva store is: Quai Gustave-Ador 2, 1207 Genève Tél +41 22 735 46 53

I'm going to get one of these for the car, but I also ride a scooter. I was talking to a colleague this morning, is it a requirement for a scooter to have one of these? Is it also a requirement for a high vis jacket or triangle? I'm guessing not as the scooter can be pushed / dragged out the way if necessary....

Ah ha, just found the actual law - it doesn't apply to scooters and specifically excludes them, so what about motorbikes?!

I managed to ask a pharmacist in LeClerc altough they didn't have any. Then CERN organized a bbq for employees and they gave away a set of two tests for everyone. Guess the idea was to let people do the test after the bbq. Atleast now I'm set!
