Buying white goods and furniture

Hi there

We are just about to move to Geneva and would apprecaite advice about buying a cooker, a fridge, beds and sofa. Is it cheaper to buy these in Geneva itself or go across to France and pay import tax?

Thanks in advance!

Probably much less expensive to buy in France. AFAIK, if you buy second-hand quality goods, these are not subject to import duty, but you would have to check this. Anyway,

Vrystaat! and hamba kahle

If you need more info, send a PM [we live just over the border in F]

To help you make a decision check the prices online. You can find some electronics brands  in Conforama Geneva with reasonable prices and Ikea furniture has some reasonable options. I think the cost of delivery and assembling exhaust the budget more than buying the items. This will be applicable in Geneva and France Good luck

While non-durable consumer goods (food and clothes) are without question cheaper in France, the answer is more complicated for durable goods (furniture and electronics), and it depends on what level of quality and durability you are looking for.

Electronics can be found at a lower price at Conforama in Meyrin (Geneva) than in France and furniture (beds, sofa) is cheaper at Conforama and Ikea in Meyrin than in France. But if you are looking for higher quality, then you will have to shop around in both sides of the border. At the high quality end, you will generally find lower prices in France.

To illustrate how it is not simple, you will find larger assortment of electronics and lower prices at the Meyrin Conforama than at the Conforama in St. Genis (France). On the other hand, electronics are cheaper at the Migros in Thoiry (France) than at Migros Balexert (Geneva). You will find comparable prices at the BUT and FLY in Chavannes (Switzerland) and Annemasse (France)

So, to make it simpler, if Ikea level quality is good enough for you, shop in Geneva at Ikea and Conforama. For electronics, try also MediaMarkt and Darty in Meyrin. Otherwise, if you are looking for higher quality, shop around on both sides of the border.

Hi Gavin,

The turonover of people in Geneva is quite high. So if you peruse the classifieds here in glocals you can find high quality items for low prices as people are moving on etc.. The items are second hand but in some instances (personal experience) are not even 3 months old and in fab condition, priced to sell quickly.

Hope that helps and best of luck!
