German Shepherd puppy

Finally i have decide to have a dog (German Shepherd). But i am clueless where to have it. So i am wondering where can I get a German Shepherd puppy In geneve or fribourg.

I never had a dog before. So What things/documentation (registration etc..) would be required for the dog to have.

You may want to see the parent animals' record regarding hip dysplasia.

if you get a dog from a breeder they will provide you with all docs... you will need to register at the commune that you have a dog (probably, depending on commune) and pay a small annual tax.

As Ferney says, check the dogs parents and grandparents history for hip diseases, you should get also a vet certificate giving the percentage chance of it.

Be prepared to pay ALOT of money to the breeder...pure bred dogs here can cost up to 2500chf.

Alternatively look for breeders in France or near the German border.

Also consider a rescue dog from www.sgpa.ch... not pure bred by a long shot... but you may find one with character there.

Finally, dont rush it, Your new dog is gonna be a family member, and its worth getting it right, research and searching for the proper dog pays off....a mistake can cost you alot more over time.

Oh and also you will have to go to puppy school... the Swiss authorities seem to think that owners need to learn how to care for a dog....and to train it properly.

Funny you can have a baby easily, but have to be trained for a dog.

Good luck.

Actually, doing a puppy class is a good investment in the future, plus it's fun!

As a first-time owner of a large-breed dog, you could benefit from some basic techniques of dog training, and these you will learn in puppy classes. Plus your large dog will be socialized with others, a very important thing. And you might find out about some activities you can do with your dog (agility, which gives them exercise, obedience trials, at which German Shepherds are very good).

There are many dog clubs around Geneva but here are two of the largest:http://www.societe-canine.ch/scg/
