If you don't have obligation to live somewhere specific, where would you live?

Hi All,

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Just curious!!!

Geneva... There are things in this city I can understand. There are things I can't understand. There are things that people tend to brought up how good it is. And then there are a lot of complaints about pretty much everything.

So just in my own curiosity to @sevket and others who say to like/love the city a lot, why this is so good city over the others you have lived in?

Me myself I do like to stay here now, but I doubt to stay here more than few years. This city and (partly the whole country) definitely lacks a lot of things that makes life safe and easy to live for an individual.

Of coarse I can be more specific. Like some of the things also your home country provides for free. Like free health care, social security, safety, not everything is rip off etc.

Good example of rip off from yesterday's talk about some company who offers boat trips on the lake. You need to confirm and pay it in advance, and when the day is, the captain decides if the weather is fit for the trip. If not, the refund might be something like 30% of your money. Only Geneva and its inhabitats allow this kind of things where the risks are covered by the customer, not the company. And this kind of stories I have heard more than enough...

You care to provide your opinnion about what makes this city really nice if it would be clean?

I can forward your request to the lady, who was organizing this boat trip. I only remember/know the name of the boat which was Neptune. Maybe she could answer more in details about the thing...

@pepso - of course geneva has its disadvantages like any other cities, there is no place at all without any disadvantages i believe, i also agree to moonfleets comment, because its true, but on the other hand advantages of geneva seem also quite obvious, social security and health care as you mentioned are important columns of the society, but also the cultural offer of the area and the intersting mix of people in this city are atttractive to me personally.

maybe because me professional and personal life took advantage of the city quite a lot, i am convinced of geneva right now, but might change after a while as well, i can immagine.

Barcelona has:

- about the right climate

- warm Mediterranean coast

- wicked architecture

- primavera sound

- sonar

- a decent university

- a big enough population that good stuff gravitates there

- tip top bars

- reasonable cost of living

- a functional subway

Probably Barcelona for me.

After havin changed my computer fan several times..i can only recommend this video to all living patients on the planet! all 6.3 billion of us!

For mild depression: only a mcdo sundae icecream should be enough

For severe depression:  watch the video in the morning, afternoon and evening 3x on a strict daily basis for 365 days! Dont stop midway..its important to carry on till the end...

If your dosage is not suitable 2 your needs, contact immediately your doctor for a new prescription...

Waooo....thanks for the nice comments and cool videos. @hayes, thanks for the details.

To start with “seket” opinions that no place is perfect. It would be nice to consider the points below to be fare to all other potential places.

1.The City infrastructure: These things include its transportation systems (roads, bridges, highways, public transportation, etc.), sewage system, utility systems (gas, electricity, water treatment and delivery), and its buildings (schools, court houses, sports facilities, and its public and private housing developments).

2. Social and health security

3. Safety

4. Cultural aspects

5. Weather

naturally i like to have my own subjective opinion on this, made up from my own experience and what i accepted as reasonable from others.

going through these points is rather a useless rational approach to the comparison of cities, where people obviously tend to have different priorities or expectations and compassionate bondings to certain cities.

i. e. istanbul is definitely rather a disadvantagous place to live according to your first 3 points. but damn i wanna live there! the city has so much to offer you, compassionate people, music, creativity, love, friendship, food and weather! there is a lot energy in that city, and an adventure is waiting for you at any corner!

...and if you dont like adventures you better go for the safe bet, with `clean´, and a secure city like zurich or geneva maybe.

Isn't the subjectivity the whole point? I mean, if there were an objective and absolute method by which we could rank cities, there wouldn't be much to talk about.

For a specific half of the 6.3 billion patients you have mentioned, that voluptuous turquoise fibrillation would have as much effect on severe depression as the cheapest Prozac placebo.

are you suggesting that about 30% of women are lesbians? i didn't know but now that you mention it, it could explain a few things.

Sure, and Geneva is always one of the top cities from those lists, but not everyone loves Geneva, many just stay because of the comfort and convenience.

There are different way to measure quality of life, but quality is elusive, and it's going to be subjective in the end.

So OK, what makes a place attractive besides comfort, security, availability of goods and services?

My question was actually about cities, given the possibility of remote working. Since many of us travel a lot and have "lived around", what place would you return to, or what place seems to be coming up?

I have lived in Dublin, Hamburg, Moscow, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Washignton DC, Addis Ababa, Pristina... I think we bring our happiness/unhappiness wherever we go.

A very good friend of mine, also an American, is happy no matter where his job takes him. He was even happy in Baghdad , Iraq. It is all about the attitude!

I think the conundrum for me is that of course security, high standard of living, good public transport etc. are all advantages... but there's also a big something to be said for a city being a bit f%ç^ed up. I'm not complaining about Zürich, it's my favourite place of those I've lived so far, but if I had a criticism it'd be that it's just too damn easy!

If theses places can ensure 24h eletricity and fast internet connection I would live in South Asia:

1. Pokhara (Nepal): Morning expresso, lake, Annapurna Mountain, stereotype culture, easy access to rest of the south Asian cities.

2. Sillong (India). Easy access to rest of the south Asian cities, Himalaya, Multicultural, you got your money's worth.

South-east Asia:

1.Chiang Mai (Thailand): Multicultural, Cafes, easy access to rest of the south-east Asian cities, you got your money's worth.

2. Luang Prubang (Laos): wicked place

3. Kuching (Malaysia Bornio): Multicultural, good level living standar, other facilities as good as EU cities.

Thats for now, will update you soon.

One question, Can anyone tell me why Geneva depresses me? it just me or you too...

If Geneva depresses you then I would suggest you move to Lausanne! It's much nicer than Geneva, lots going on, young city with a great atmosphere!

I used to be a pro Geneva 10 years ago but now I changed my mind.

If I could live anywhere I would chose Dubai cos this is an happening city but way too hot; hence I am still in CH!

Just where we are now! Evian-les-Bains. It's absolutely beautiful, between the lake and the mountains; has an enormous amount to offer, not just nature but this evening for example, we are going to a free chamber music concert in the parish church. Another free gala concert tomorrow. Meanwhile, clean, fresh air, friendly people. We have lived all over the world on three continents, including a place [which shall be nameless] which a number of people would consider super but which we hated because of lack of culture and rough, ignorant inhabitants. We also lived in Belgium for 15 years and that was fantastic for architecture and culture but oh! the weather, the cold, the damp, brrrrrrr. No, here is wonderful.

Oh, and of course Geneva airport and even Zuerich airport are not that far away for incoming guests - of which there are a great many now, that we live in this lovely little town.
