Lest We Forget

LEST WE FORGET

words from Kemal Ataturk, the Commander of the Turkish 19th Division during the Gallipoli Campaign and the first President of the Turkish Republic from 1924-1938 said ;

 those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives. You are now living in the soil of a friendly country therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

It’s the centenary of the landings in Gallipoli, one of the bloodiest battles in modern history.

25 April is also ANZAC Day which is celebrated by Australia and, New Zealand as well as the UK.

Each year there is a service of commemoration at the UK War Graves memorial in St Martin’s Cemetery in Vevey which is attended by diplomatic representatives of those countries as well as Turkey and members of the various veterans’ associations and allied communities in Switzerland.

Nir , grab an Aussie or NZ paper online and you will be able to get some insight into these celebrations ( although that is probably the wrong term in this case.)

Good idea, Jeff.

I think “commemoration” is the word you were looking for.

And a very good ANZAC Day to you.
