There was an interesting programme on "Escape to the Continent" recently about a couple who did just what you are wanting to do. The availability of residence for EU citizens is of course automatic [unlike CH] and the choice of housing varied and interesting. However, the programme did point out that one should be aware of "hidden costs" [presumably lawyer's fees, transfer fees, et al].
