My US passport is expiring next month, can any of the Americans provide any advice on how best to go about renewing it? Do you need to wait unitl it expires or do you send it in before it expires? I should say I live in Geneva so I know I can either send or drop it off at the consulate. Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

you do it through bern. the american consulate here in geneva cant do anything, its a wonder they still exist.
you should do it before it expires since then you would be here with an expired passport which is probably against some law.
all the info is here
http://bern.usembassy.gov/renewals_mail.html
i did it by mail there and it only took like 2 weeks to get the new one back.

Go to the American Center at rue Versonnex 7 (close to Pont Mont Blanc and Jardin Anglais). You can get all info there and submit it there, too.
One thing to be aware of....if you need new photos, they have to be 2" x 2" which of course is an American standard and not too easy to find here in Geneva. The American Center directed me to a photo studio who can do the correct sizes.
The benefit of going to the Am. Center is that you can talk to the guy and make sure you have everything you need, filled in things correctly, etc. before it's submitted. And it also only took 2 weeks.
They have limited hours and it's always hard to find info on the 'net, but it's there, somewhere. Number is +41.22 906.90.12.
And I agree, get it done before it expires.
