Spam calls from Swiss landline

i used to get these kinds of calls in german but it was different this time -- the guy knew my name (!!!) and insisted to get to talk to me in person about some building security stuff and then asked to open the door while not actually being there :) he kinda got me confused but anyway is there anything i could do to prevent this from happening again?

TIA

I had the same problem, with spam called from "Microsoft East London" calling me, saying they had detected a problem on my computer. I also receieved the cold calls from German speakers. I complained to the phone company, and they said the best they could do was to give me a new, unlisted number.

I don't know of anything similair to the https://www.donotcall.gov/ registery in the USA.

The "Microsoft" calls are scams, they are done by criminals pretending they're Microsoft Support; their purpose is to infect your computer and take control of it. More info here: https://www.melani.admin.ch/melani/en/home/themen/fake_support.html

The calls in German are mostly spam from companies that want to lure you into changing your health insurance. More info here: https://www.frc.ch/dossiers/dossier-appels-publicitaires/

Unfortunately there's not much you can do to avoid these calls; try as much as possible to avoid listing your phone number into public records.

Also, all modern smartphone OSes have an option to blacklist phone numbers, which you can use to prevent the same caller from bothering you again.

You can use this service to check out which numbers are used for spamming: http://stopting.ch/fr and https://tel.local.ch/en/phone-number-search.

Swisscom have a free number blocking service called Call Filter. Google it or search on their website and it guides you through the activation and how you can add numbers to your personal blacklist.

Just put the phone down and let them talk :-))))

But I am not always harsh with them. Sometimes it is just their only possibility to earn money so they are in a difficult situation and have to work in phone marketing. So I try to be empathic a little bit.

A friend of mine once had to sell a bottle of a useless floor cleaner for 60 CHF. .. but he was just out of money so he had no other choice.

:DDD I like this way of thinking.

But to be honest, they are getting worst and worst. Not even they know my name but they try to act like my friend.

I had a call starting by

'Hi Andrea, how are you? Everything is ok?'

They got me really convinced that I am talking to somebody I know and than they tried to 'helped me with my finances' :D

It is just too much!

If someone starts by asking “Mme (my name)?”, I know it’s a nuisance call because my friends and  business contacts always identify themselves.

So, as soon as I hear “Mme ..?” I lay the phone down.  A couple of minutes later, I check if the person is still there but he/she never is so I then replace the receiver.

This usually affords me a week or so’s respite before someone (presumably a new employee) tries again and I repeat my routine.

I’m told that most of these calls are extramural so there’s little that the Swiss authorities can do about them.

That said, there’s no way that I’m going to purchase anything from someone I’ve never seen let alone met but I do understandthat many people  let themselves be persuaded by glib sales talk.

Sorry, Jonas. While your empathetic attitude and altruism is admirable, in most cases, telemarketing calls are unfortunately not as harmless.

For some, getting talked into buying a bottle of useless cleaner is bad enough. But worse still is buying it, obviously not with cash, and getting charged without getting the product, or finding out you actually "bought" a bottle per week, or the like. In the best case scenario, companies get you to buy subscriptions or long term services and you will find it very hard to sever the contract.

One well-know case of a legitimate company is Neoliane Prevoyance. You pick up the phone and you get a recording that "an anomaly has been found in your medical records." You get transferred to a person who calls you by your name and asks you for some information, like your birthdate, to confirm it is really you. In fact, they only have your name and phone number. Then, after getting additional information from you, they use a prepared script based on your age, or other data you gave them, to get you to buy this additional health insurance. In the end, you find yourself with a hard to break contract that provides you insurance with lots of loopholes so it covers almost nothing.

There is a growing number of scams which are even worse.

You can easily check a number by typing it into www.local.ch

For example with the number from the post above:

 https://tel.local.ch/en/spamnumber/+41%2044%20520%2075%2077

Recently, however, I'm finding that the numbers spammers use when calling me are actually legitimate numbers - often from the other side of Switzerland.  The spammers are spoofing these numbers without the knowledge of the poor people that actually own them.

You can instal "Truecaller" that predict spam calls, then refuse and block this number.
