WRG - total change to the radio's format - you aware of it?
I have heard from several sources that WRG (World Radio Geneva) is totally changing its format as of the beginning of October. It will no longer be a commercial radio station, so will no longer serve the English-speakers in the Geneva area with its ads in English aimed at that particular community. Nor will it have its usual quizzes with prizes - as there will no longer be any advertising sponsors to support the prizes! So no more free movie tickets, tickets to events, etc. I have also heard that there will be no Traffic Update feature, and other such useful info....

Just wanted to know if anyone else was aware of these major changes, and to know what you think? As I understand it, the radio will be run by TSR (Swiss) and will be news-based. Maybe you like that idea? But seems a shame that if something "ain't broken, don't try to fix it" For me, WRG is a really useful and informative station for the English-speaking community. And there is no mention of these changes on the radio - would have been nice to let the listeners know in advance, and to maybe get their views? Apparently, anyone at the radio who mentions it on air will lose their job!

Look forward to hearing your comments!

There was an official announcement some time ago if I remember correctly, I think I read an article (in Le Temps I guess) about that.
You can see an article (in french) there: http://www.hebdo.ch/index.cfm?&id=3180

they got tired of Britabroad always getting the answers right and winning their quizes... so their only way was to drop the station :o)

in all seriousness... WRG used to be my lifeline to sanity when i first came here with no TV in my flat, no internet...nothing apart from the radio through my phone. I would listen to them now through the internet if only their LIVE STREAM would work, but somehow it doesn't work on my home pc. (if anyone may know why this is, do let me know!!)

I'd hate to lose WRG as it is now. There isn't much of an alternative on the car radio; although I find the music mix a bit quirky, the presenters are enormously entertaining. It would be a loss to the English-speaking community.

Thanks - will check out the article on the link you gave me. And then wait for Mark Butcher to reply... but not on the air, if he values his job! Understand it will be a Swiss-wide station (WRS?) so will no longer have the local flavour. Thankfully there is Geneva Online!
