What happens when stolen cards get used here'

I was robbed by two men at lausanne station saturday.they stole all my money plus postfinance card and other cards.:I went straight to the police, dazed and in shock.By the time they gave me a number to cancel my card,1,000CHF had been drawn out by the thieves.

I now find that 1,000 may not be refunded by the post office-no refund is guaranteed. Is this normal? The money gone is a third of my monthly salary(in a good month!)So a considerable loss.

Anybody got any ideas?

Buzz, sorry for your loss. What a horrid experience.

Normally the banks/post etc guatantee any losses "after" you cancel the card... ie not at a cash withdrawal (which should be impossible on a cancelled card...but  s hop purchase for example where the old fashioned carbon paper is used etc.)

Sadly it unlikely you will see the 1000 back from post finance.... since their issue may be with the time it took you to go to the police and call to cancel the card, and the time it took the thieves to use the card  was so short...., since in the banks view you maybe had a "pin" stored with the card and hence the risk was yours, or you withdrew the cash just before being robbed. (you'll be suprised how many people do both and try it on with the card firms)

Even though these days there are machines that can find pins pretty quickly, or duplicate cards with open pins.

Sorry it sounds horrid, and really is, but I suspect that there is not much you can do about it other than shoulder the loss at the card firm.

One option however would be to check your home insurance policy... they often have clauses of losses outside the home, and it would include your phone, bag, purse and maybe up to 2000 cash. Its probably the only way you may get something back at least.

Good luck.

hey...thank you! So you CAN be serious and supportive!

I think your analysis is correct.

Actually,my insurance is not able to help

My options now are to remain calm, try to forget the incident and tell myself "it's only money"But it's hard work - and involves lots of unpleasant dreams, and unpleasant relections about being a non-rich immigrant cast adrift in this weird country......

I'm so glad to see this message from you,of all people - puts you in a new light.

Thank you very much.

By the way,the PIn was not with the card - would never do that!

I don't understand how the rich always seem to get it back but the poor seem to be the REAL victims of crime.

I also don't understand why the police report doesn't state the time I arrived at their place - that would surely prove i couldn't have been at the cash machine at the same tme! But,to be honest, exhausted with fighting now!!!

I am so sorry of what happened to you dear. Same thing happened to me in November in front of Lausanne train station but I got luckier than you. Somebody found my purse with all my documents and gave it back to me but my card was missing. I called the bank to block it and luckily no money was withdrawn. I have no idea if an insurance exists that covers your case of robbery but that's a good question to investigate. I'll let you know if I find something.

Sadly I find insecurity is getting worse in CH. Of course nothing compared to other places on Earth but still... we need to be more and more careful. I also went to the police and told them that there seems to always be some kind of gang hanging out near the train station. They agreed but seemed quite resigned.

I'll buy you as many pints as you like to cheer you up on Saturday! Tongue out
