I have only seen NFL being shown at Mr Pickwicks. Haven't seen any MLB, NHL or NBA! there's certainly a gap in the market for that. I've been watching various sports on my laptop using Sopcast but I would rather go to a bar and watch. It's more social!

Sorry not to be much help but thought I would reply as noone else has....yet.

Andy, was at Mc. Sorley's in Vernet the other day and they were playing NHL Playoff's, but it is hit or miss there.  They always play sports, but more often it is European Leagues.  They do have a wide variety of channels though and are generally helpful if you want a specific game  - provided Geneve Servette is not playing that day.  Oh, they have good burgers & beer.

Otherwise, Pickwicks does play NFL games most weekends.

Finally... the Irish Pub in the Old Town (never remember the name of it, sorry) will play baseball games some days.

Yep it's called Spring Brothers,

Come along, if we are not showing a big match and you want to watch either NBA, NHL or MLB just ask and we'll put it on for you.

Hey Andy,

The best way is to book a flight back to NYC, Washington or wherever you come from and you can watch all you want . . . next you'll be asking where you can get American beer and ambiance.  This is Switzerland and there are plenty of European sports to be watched (try taking the cultural difference).

Hey Poster,

Your response was neither helpful nor appreciated.  Everyone else on the thread has been nice and told me spots to check out in Geneva.  You instead have told me to go back to America, so thanks for nothing.

@Andy I fully agree with your response to Poster. It's for responses like that, that I wish there were also a "Thumbs Down this message" not just "Thank Poster"

The biggest problem with US sports here in Europe is the time difference. Most games in the US are at 7:00pm or so, which is already 1:00am here, by which time all bars, etc. are closed.

The major US sports all have something like a Season Pass that can be bought and then you can watch both live or...... tape delay, like the next day. I've approached Mr. Pickwick's and The Clubhouse to subscribe - at least during the playoffs! - and then on days where there are no other live sports to speak of, they could show a recent game. Or during they playoffs they could show "last night's" game the next day.

Maybe we could start a petition or FaceBook group to show the bars in town that enough customers interested in US sports would make it worth their while?

Or, how about you and I open an American Diner, open 24/7 with Breakfast all day long, serving Sam Adams and showing as many live and re-broadcast games as possible.... Whaddya say?

Hi Guys

I understand your fustration on this, the problem is to do with licensing laws, where you are only allowed to be open a certain number of hours per day, unless you get special permission to be open longer for big events. If you're a pub or bar your license allows you to be open from 10am until 2am, if you're a club 6pm until 5am. There is no license that will allow you to be open 24/7

@Maestron The Romans.... you mean those who conquered neighboring countries and imposed Roman culture, government, etc. upon other cultures, right?

In any case, that's a bit trite in these days of people from all countries working throughout the world. Rather than clinging to mores and customs from 2000 years ago, feel free to join the global community and the 21st century. ;) :)

@DJ_Symcard hmmmmm, ok, that's all but 5 hours a day. Can I declare my 'place of business' as a bar during certain hours and club during other hours? And what about Hotels, Casinos and - i can only assume - certain areas of the Red Light District in Paquis. Tell me they aren't open 24/7.

I understand there are laws, but surely there must be a loop hole, provision, or a way to accomplish this while working within the system.

(This mostly just a theoretical discussion, but I'd really love to see this realized.)

But we're not in Rome, we're in Geneva ;)

@Zonker - you could always inquire about the different licenses, there normally is a loophole, you could possibly apply for special permissions.

Those places thatare open 24/7 are not always open legally ;)

Anyway, I'm at Spring Brothers now and we're showing MLB highlights if anyone wants to come for a beer or 10 :D

Cheers

@DJ_Symcarcd OK, I need to stop by Spring Brothers. Remind me where it is, please? And, how many screens are there for sports?

I can't tell if you're the proprietor or not, but if so, would you be willing to consider my suggestion and show *full* NBA games the next day? I know many people who would FLOCK to such a possibility...... All you have to do is sign up for the NBA League Pass for $100 and all playoff games are available, both live and on-demand.

Come on!! I wanna watch my Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics and Boston Red Sox (who are starting the season pretty slow, I must say...)

Ah, Zonkers, another Boston Fan.  Good to have you on board.  I have a sling box at home (my brother is kindly giving up his TV in Washington DC to me) so I can watch any game any time, but.... I will have to head back to the Spring Brothers for some baseball soon.

Thanks all for the entertaining thread.

That's the whole point !  When in Geneva do as . . . .  not as in Boston or Chicago or Toledo.  I mean, you're from the UK, do you watch darts, lawn bowls, anyone for cricket?

And you've been to Rome . . . and did you got to eat McBarf or to eat good pasta ?

Next thing they'll want to see is "Strikes Spares & Misses" (10 pin bowling) !!!!!

I think you're unhappy because you have no friends! (Looked at your Glocals profile, says you have 0 friends)

There is nothing wrong with people wanting to do or see things they are used to. I still follow my favourite sport rugby when I can.

Geneva is a multi-cultural city and thrives on the diversity and other flavours that the diverse cultures bring to it, or do you only watch and eat and go to everything that is strictly Swiss?

I'm looking forward to NFL. I happen to be a lucky Texans fan where Houston usually play at noon so only 7PM here.

Symcard, hopefully when football starts, you're bar will be showing some of those games.

As for NBA playoffs, Rockets didn't make it (not that I was expecting them to) but i wouldn't mind seeing other teams (i'm all about rooting for Garnett) and some MLB.

And Poster, adapting a new culture doens't mean letting go of your previous one....some people can be multi cultured..pity you fail to understand and appreciate that.

@Adrian S, @Jerome G: just wondering if you really appreciated "Poster"s comment or if your accounts have been hacked. It's just curious that you haven't said anything on the thread and but took time out to show your support for "Poster".

@Naurin: if you want to root for Garnett, then I'll be there with you.

Sounds like we'll have to make an outing to Spring Brothers, but it would be nice to know what's playing. I have to admit, I'm not such a huge fan of baseball. I'd much rather see the NBA or NHL playoffs.

However, as a good yankee you chose to ignore the comment about what the USA has done invading Iraq - or is that the usual American way to appologise, oh so sorry, we only came for the oil (but you didn't get any).

As to your insinuation about accounts being hacked - you truly are pathetic.  But as a geek, you probably know all about that kind of stuff.

trite? i'd say the idea of "when in rome, do as the romans" is more comparable with horseshit. consider the romans themselves as an example. when the romans were in rome, doing their roman stuff, all would have been well with both the world in general, and with rome in particular. but did they stay in rome doing their roman stuff? no. they had to leave, didn't they. gallivant all over europe building a stupid empire. had they adopted the policy of when in rome, do as the romans while they were building that empire, well, let's just say that history would look very different. every place they tried to put an aqueduct, they would have been greeted with "excuse me, that isn't how we do things around here... " and the romans would have been all "sorry? can you say that slower and louder, i only speak latin". the romans would have had to learn the local dialect before they understood that the locals didn't want no newfangled aquaduct in their back yard. basically, the application of when in rome, do as the romans would have utterly bollocksed it up. it'd be ridiculous. you know, like figuring out exactly where you say septante, huitante, and nonante, vs where you say septante, huitante, but still quatre-vingt dix. or where a canette gets you a tin can, and where it gets you a pint in a glass. as soon as they left rome, they'd have had to be considering where exactly they were and who they should have been behaving like. and what if they went to a place where there was nobody? would it have been like multiplying by zero or dividing by? do they stop? is it no information or infinite? i don't know. i see divergence and recurrence and scale-independence and all kinds of problems with this. had the romans applied when in rome, do as the romans, i doubt they would have got as far as pisa.

so anyway, what i'm trying to say is that since the romans of all people didn't abide by when in rome do as the romans, you can do what the fuck you want wherever you go. or is doing what you want the same as abiding by the principle?

core dump.

Get a grip people!!!

Andy wants to know where he can watch American sports in Geneva.

He's not trying to subvert Swiss culture, he probably didn't orchestrate the US invasion of Iraq and I also assume he was not a Roman general conquering foreign lands.

If you know where he can watch the games and want to help him out, fell free to post the info here.

If you want to berate him for wanting to watch / eat / experience something that is not 100% Swiss, or for being an American, open a 'We hate anything that isn't Swiss' group on FB instead.

I've been away all morning, so can only now respond....

@robi good to see you laugh

@oded amen, brother!

@hayes always a laugh. Well put.

@jerome Yeah, I'm really ready for World Cup, but it's still 44 days away! Which is why I'm so eager to see some NBA and NHL.

(if you'll permit me, Oded et al)

@maestron i chose to ignore your comment about IRAK (sic) because it is completely irrelevant to the discussion about where to see US sports in Geneva. I didn't think I'd have to s-p-e-l-l it out for you, but I guess I was wrong.

@all so, where can I see the Celtics vs. Heat tonight? Or tomorrow afternoon?

Andy,

Sorry to see some folks were rude to you.  I am not sure if its xenophobia, a bad impression of Americans, or just a generally negative disposition in general.  It turns out you can enjoy the neat things of your host country as an ex-pat AND still cling on to your leisures and traditions from back home without being called closed minded or frowned down upon.  I guess some people don't get that.

At clubhouse the management is extremely friendly.  They can play any TV being shown on any of the SkySports channels (see skysports.com for their sports line-up) or anything on ESPN America.

They have been kind enough to put on NASCAR races, College Football, and NFL games for me.  I just had to call ahead of time after consulting SkySports or ESPNAmerica and let them know what time.

Good luck getting settled in.

Ok Guys, you want it you got it!

NBA at Spring Brothers, Sunday I will put an NBA Marathon in place 4 games (I have the league pass)

14:00 to 17:00, 17:00 to 20:00, 20:00 23:00 and 23:00 to 02:00

Just let me know what games you want to watch, and if you're good I will show more games on monday from 17:00.

Now if there are loads of you I'll show the games on 4 Screens, otherwise it will be 2 Screens, so that other punters can watch sports.

So what do you want to watch?

Simon - manager at Spring Brothers.

@DJ_Symcard WOOHOO!!!!! This is GREAT NEWS! I'll be there on Sunday to see at least 2-3 games. I'd love to see Game 1 of Celtics vs. Cavaliers and I think that we should see Lakers vs. Thunder since the Thunder have a Swiss player (Thabo Sefolosha).

I have something in the early afternoon, but I would love to see the Celtics at 17.00 and the Lakers at 20.00. Would that be possible?

In any case, I'm there.

Despite the fact that I don't really approve of British pubs abroad, the fact that I don't like televisions in bars in general, and that I probably don't like whatever this sport is, I might show up just to confirm that Thabo Sefolosha is a real name.

But lets just point out that Basketball was invented and developed in North America (Canada & USA). Which Europeans play.

No, that's netball -- it was invented in Europe and it's a girls' game. Plus it's harder than basketball because you can't drop the ball and save face by pretending you meant to bounce it, and there is no backboard so if you miss the hoop you don't get a second chance (and you can't pretend that is what you meant to).

What the Americans did was take a girls' game, make it easier, and pay people a billion dollars per second to stand in front of the cameras and play it. People that are anyway tall enough to put the ball in the hoop without their feet leaving the ground.

No, that's rounders -- it was invented in Europe and it's a girls' game. Plus, it's harder than baseball because you don't get three strikes so when you can flail wildly and later say you didn't like that one, and because the bat is shorter.

We've covered everything aspect from American football 2 girls netball and handball...2 roman generals and iraqi invasion ..sorry Us invasion of Iraq...Except for RUGBY UNION!

Now its a contact Sport invented by William Webb Ellis in 1823, when he realised  that he did not have all the necessary skills to simply play the "European football" so he decided 2 just pick up the bloody ball and run! good on you willie boy...couldnt have done better myself!

Now as some of u well know the New Zealand All blacks are consistently the best side in the world (except that they dont have a world title 2 show for alll their efforts of singing , shouting ,  playin) ..their war dance is called The haka _ many opposing teams just stand and watch the haka, others look at the blue (or grey, usualy very grey) sky, while many others just meanstare and eyeball the all blacks until their eyes just pop out!

Hey DJ_Symcard, do you reckon you can keep the bar open until about 6am on Friday morning so we can watch the incoming results of this looming disaster otherwise known as the 2010 UK general election? Or, if I swing by late on Thursday you can give me the keys. Don't worry, I'll lock up when I leave. Thanks!

1. Usually they play American sports in those America type bars, you know like the sports bars u can find around europe with American oriented things like baseball bats and football uniforms hanging on the walls, and u can buy those tasty and unhealthy burgers hehehehehehehe

2. don't give a crap about the prejudice of others, for some reason, some europeans get touchy with the USA, I was once asking a guy from Netherlands where can I take number X bus to a certain part of rotterdam and he was a jerk with me, only because he thought I was American!!!! when he realized I wasn't he turned nice and actually spoke english to me!!!

3. Don't try to fit in so much in Geneva, do what makes you happy!!! if watching american sports make u happy, go for it!!!! don't go cow watching like the swiss if u think is boring just because u feel the need to fit in....

to be brutally honest this city is one of the most boring places I've seen not only in europe but the world! ( and i lived in 4 continents already, speak several languages and mastered the art of adapting to different cities and cultures), the locals are not friendly or open to conversation with others, stores have awkard opening hours, everything is expensive and the night life is virtually non-existant!!!

the only reason I keep my sanity here is my partner who works for an embassy here, otherwise I would move to berlin, south america, budapest, paris or madrid in a heartbeat.

Naurin, yeah, I went. The Celtics weren't doing so well from the start and then the video feed became untolerable so I left in the 3rd quarter.

Sure Spring Brothers will show it (depending on the time it takes place) If we can't show the live match, then we'll definately show it the next day. Just let me know if you want to come so I can get it set up.

I just saw this thread, and had a good laugh at some of the posts.

A guys asks a simple question: where he can watch his favourite sport. In return, some genius members attack him for liking a sport that is not Swiss and for the US invasion of Iraq...(-.

I'm one of the co-founders of glocals so i really want to love all members, but sometimes I myself wonder about some folks' perspective on things...Cool
