Buying a second-hand car in Geneva

Hello all,

I live in Geneva and am wanting to buy a second-hand car. Do any of you have any tips on how to go about it: where to find the best and most reliable deals ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Three essential things to check:

1 The car must have a very recent expertise (or be sold when the expertise is done)

2 The seller should declare it 'non-accidentée', or if it has had an accident, understand what the repair was and who did it. An accident is defined to be one that involves a major repair to the body.

3 For a private seller, ensure he owns the car, ie that it isn't leased!

You can get a car checked by TCS if you have any doubts about its condition.

Try and estimate the car's price using the 'argus'.

For a sale by a garage, negotiate some sort of guarantee (even if only say 3 months for an older car).

In my opinion s/h cars are often good value in Switz compared to buying new, but this of course depends on how the previous owner(s) treated it and how much you're paying.

Go to the Salon de la Voiture d'Occasion, 1-3 October.  It's their 18th so it obviously works.  See www.palexpo.ch for more information. All the garages are there and you have a great range of cars and prices to choose from.

Good luck

Autoscout has the best selection by far. There is also a function on there which will tell you what the value of a car is.....and thats usually about 20 % less than the advertised prices. I bought mine from an ad on World Radio Switzerland website. That and the classified on here feature quite a lot of cars being sold by expats on their way out of Suisse, so there are some good bargains to be had.

I think the advice from Nicholas M is very sensible too. The car I bought was on lease and I had a rather torturous path to follow to pay for it.....I had to pay the lease company and not the owner, but it all worked out fine in the end
