For cuban style, I can strongly reccomend salseros-de-hoy(.ch) in Vernier. Good instructions, and friendly atmosphere. Also Kap-Dance, at the top of rue de Lyon. Cours-bravo is also well known, but I'm not convinced about their techniques. Their clientelle is more adult than many of the other clubs. MAD (mad-geneve.ch) also give courses, practical if you're going to the Thursday night dance there.
Otherwise, there are plenty of salsa clubs, salsavirus, sabor-salsa, ...
If you're UN, several orgs have dance clubs, trying to organise different courses.
Drop me a line if you want more info.

Hi everybody,
Let me know if you found out about the UN class/parties. That could also be a good way to meet people. What about the best clubs/ bars?
I remember 2 years ago I went a thursday night to a nice bar around plain palais full of latino and focusing rather on portoricaine.

Since i have just moved here from NY i don't know of any schools but here's my advice to you from a Latina's point of view.
Style of Salsa does not matter...all depends on what you are looking for, your taste etc. But, cuban salsa for example particularly in schools are very ridgid movements. It is stiff, if you will. Other forms (ie; Puertorican style) allow more diversity and is more about enjoying the music. Of course, i am puerto rican so my opinion is partial so to be fair here is what i say...i LOVE, ABSOLUTELY LOVE dancing Salsa, Bomba and Plena and what i find is that non-hispanic people who learn Salsa in schools often are very stiff and do not enjoy the true essence of truly enjoying the music, its the school that teaches these textbook and stiff movements. They do not embrace the spirited essence of true Salsa, only 1 and 2 and blah, blah, blah. Puertorican style of salsa however is very free...its 'feeling' the music so that your hips naturally just move on its own (as if having a mind of its own) all while you are eating, or painting, LOL (a bit of dramatics but i hope you get the drift).
So, when you attend the classes for cuban style or something...learn the techniques...the basics and you will be fine. Then you can practice with others (NOT from the school) and learn to enjoy the true 'vibe' and freeness of dancing salsa...the true traditional and lively way. But if you are looking to look like a pro or very textbook like...then continue with the lifetime membership to the school or better yet pick up some Tango courses. :)

Hi Jess,
I really liked your post though I would say you have a strong Puerto Rico bias!
Actually my sweet heart is from Cuba and he's always saying that the portorican salsa is like Ballet and that Cuban is more about feeling the music and having fun (and not counting 123). I prefer the Puertorican as I find it more challenging and technical (though I don't raise too much the point as... that could generate collateral damage at home).
So were do we dance Puertorican for fun in Geneva????? and where are the good classes??? And where are the latino communities down town?

LOL! Your are too funny. Yes, i am a true patriot you can say about my culture.
Well, since i am new here (just shy of two weeks) i really don't even know how to get around much let alone find what both our hearts and rythmic hips are searching for. But no neet to fret...my long term goal is to open up an open mic-live music lounge with this. In the meanwhile please keep in touch. I will begin very shortly organizing small dinner parties then bigger more organized and fun-filled parties with traditional foods, music, dancing and drinks (like coquito). Will be loads of fun and i am super excited.
Abrasos,
Jess

Hi Jess,
Nice ambition (the mic-live music lounge). I look forward to join the dinner and parties... and try the unknown coquito.
Keep us posted with your activities,
Bye!

The UNOG dance club is relatively quiet these days. The salsa & tango classes stopped through lack of participants. (And organisers.) I think oriental (belly) dancing still continues, but don't have any details, being of the wrong gender. (The teacher is a man, though.)
There is a group that practices Salsa every week at lunchtime. Write me, or call on 72497 for more details.
In addition to UNOG, ITU has a strong Tango group, and I think ILO (luisito) still has a dance group.

I didn't come across this in all the forum replies, but there is a beginners portoricaine salsa class starting this week (0795226636, www.evaespoleta.com)
Otherwise great to find out about the other salsa schools and learn there are some more portiricaine salsa enthusiasts out there:)
