Desperate to tickle the ivory... for free.

Hey everyone,

I am looking for info on where I could practice piano impro at least once a week (upright or grand, new, old and even slightly out of tune) ?

Does anyone here have an idea of a place I could go to regularly (alone)... for free and the sheer sake of music ? Tongue Out

Call it Piano-sitting. I've been longing for the touch of a keyboard and I'm sure there must be plenty of lonely instruments resting behind these Geneva walls that could use some gentle stroking from time to time.

Any suggestions are greatly welcome.

Cheers :)

Hi Mel,

If you are looking for pianos at public places or pubs , then here are a few :

- Bel-Air tram stop

- Le Scandale (downstairs near the washrooms)

- Le Kraken

- La Galerie at Rue de l'Industrie 13

I'm sure there are many other pubs with pianos ...

Cheers,

Nairit

Thanks a lot Nairit, I will check these options out!

I was actually thinking of somewhere quiet and more intimate, (room, hall, school) with minimal distractions or noise around.

Laughing

hey Mal! Maybe you can try to make a deal with an owner of a small cafe -- MLC Librairie Café, Rue de Carouge 98. Otherwise there is also a piano in l'Espace de Quartier Secheron, Avenue Blanc 7.  On the left from the entrance. If I remember right, it is in the coridor, but in the evening noone is there. The level of privacy and quitness is decent in both places. Good luck with practising and keep us updated if it worked in the end Laughing.

Chevre, I like your ideas.

Thank you so much for the reply, I will definitely look into these as well and will keep you posted if/when anything works out.

It could always be useful to other pianoless piano lovers :)

A quick little update. I tried Secheron Espace de Quartier, the piano is not there anymore and the music rooms are only availble to those living in the area. I called a few other Espaces de quartier and one of them (old town) might be ok to let me use their piano when school starts again, yet to be confirmed.

I will try le Scandale at quiet hours and see how that feels...

However, any extra ideas are still welcome.

Thanks again for the great tips. :)

Happy summer!

Just as a shot in the dark, you could ask at a couple of your local churches if they have a piano in their church hall that you could use.

However, there would be the matter of collecting and returning the key(s) and possibly a charge because of their insurance coverage  – the rules governing this can be quite stringent.

But maybe worth a try?

Hi Mel,

I have a clavinalo - these are great for appartments as you can turn the volume way down or even put on headphones.

I play quite a lot myself and know that feeling of wanting to play and not having a piano.

Give me a call if you want to come by one day and play.

Thanks a lot Hilary, that's super kind of you to offer! I used to have a clavinova as well, and have to agree they are so convenients for apartments.

But you know, there's nothing like the acoustic and resonance of a large hall ;)

I did save your number, even though... I know how my shyness works.

A great evening to you!

So True Mel,

Nothing beats a great piano ( grand or baby)  with a high cieling and view over the water, and a nice massage after to relax he shoulders!

But at least you know in case of emergency pangs....the clavinova is here! :)

Ahh absolutely! Hilary, you just captured the essence of my reveries! :P

But I will keep the Clavinova offer in mind (must have some reverence for these helpful fellows). Merci again, very much appreciated!

Is that a transparent piano? ... excuse me while I faint.
