Doctors and dentists?

Where might I find good ones that speak English rather well? (Unforunately I can't speak even a bit of French).

Definitely Dentist www.cressidadawson.com.

Best Dental practise out here by a long way. Based in Carouge. (and she's a Brit, not that it should make any difference but in terms of being able to discuss treatments, its a real bonus!)

Can you maybe read some French?  This website lists all doctors in Geneva, with a drop down field for language.  Unfortunately the other hurdle is that even if the doctor can speak English, often the receptionist doesn't... http://www.amge.ch/medecins/annuaire-des-medecins/

Are you looking for a general practitioner? Men or women? In which area?

So many helpful replies! Thank you all! To answer your questions in one reply: I'm looking for a general practitioner but would be helpful to know if specific specialists as well! How does healthcare work in Geneva? Does it take ages to get a new patient intake appointment? No preference as to men or women, though I suppose more sensitive gender-specific problems if they arise might be best handled by a male. As for area, I don't have a strong preference but something near the cut center/UN/Grand Saconnex areas would be nice. I'm willing to go further afield for the most highly recommended though.

Unfortunately I don't read French.

Thank you for the helpful recommendations as to doctors and dentists; if other members have others they would recommend, please continue to post about them here!

I would recommend that you find a good general practitioner, preferably near your home, so handy for general health care, ’flu jabs, etc.

Then, if you ever need more specialist advice, he/she will be able to

refer you to a colleague and even set up an appointment for you, which short-cuts the waiting time to be seen.  The GP can also provide info on your recent health record, which again saves time.

However, the specialist’s surgery/office may not be near your home because specialists tend to set up shop near to the hospital or clinic facility where they work.

All Swiss-trained doctors with the FMH qualification speak English, some more fluently than others but, as someone has already mentioned, not all of their receptionists do.  However, the younger ones usually have adequate basic knowledge.

If you are working in one of the UN organizations, you can also ask the Medical Service for advice on finding a practitioner.

There are also walk-in clinics in and around Geneva where you can get treatment for a variety of needs, including accidents.

Also, there are call-out medical services such as “Genève Médeecins”  (my personal preference) and “SOS Médeecins” who can also arrange emergency admission to a hospital or clinic if required.

The doctors and telephonists all speak adequate English.

However, be aware that these services don’t come cheap.

In any case, be sure to have your medical insurance card handy whenever you need to see a doctor.

All the best, R.

Hi

We go to this medical practice:

http://cmch.magellan.ch

They have been excellent and have branches at several locations around the city. Lots of general practitioners and a big network of specialists, plenty of whom speak English.

The receptionists (mostly) speak english, and you can always send emails in english for anything that is not urgent.

Cheers
