Fetes de Geneve 2017

Could some kindly knowledgeable person[s] point us in the right direction to finding out which parts of Geneva city will be closed to traffic on 5 August and 12 August. Rather unfortunately, our family arrive at the airport on 5/08 and leave on 12/08. Very often it appears that parts or all of the city centre are blocked off causing chaos for those who would normally cross the Pont de Mont Blanc and travel towards Evian.

Have looked at the various websites but they are singularly unhelpful. Thanks in advance.

You always can take the autoroute from the airport to Evian. So can avoid the Fetes completely. It is also fast.

But the road around the Fetes will be closed on and off especially around the fireworks and usually the road on front of Kempinski is closed.

Try contacting Touring Club Suisse.  They should have the information.

Best, R.

As Reka Y suggests, autoroute to Villeneuve then turn off to road along lakeside  for St Gingolf / Evain-les-Bains  advantage of being   nice for the visitors wiith lovely views of La Cote, Vevey Montreux and the lake, easy but longer for you to drive

Otherwise a question of  studying a map and taking the Autoroute de Contournemant, sortie Carouge, direction Carouge , then picking your way via route de St Julian direction Carouge. follow signs for Thônex, Veyrier
This will take you turning right at the tunnel, route Val d’Arve. Then turn left onto route de Veyrier to pass In front of the Service d’Auto. Right  at traffic lights onto Route de Vessy direction Bout de Monde, and then follow main road curving to the left and uphill, (road will now be called Av Louis Auberg), to intersection route de Malagnou,  Arrive at intersection where chemin de Rieu is straight ahead, but filter off right onto  route de Malagnou, Straight on to customs and autoroute on Route Blanche. Off at sortie Annemasse at Etrembieres and directors for Thonon and Evian from there are apparent.

Otherwise at Malagnou straight on at Ch Rieu over route de Malagnou and route de Chêne, then turn right onto Chemin Frank Thomas. Roadworks for the future CEVA will prevent you from turning onto the route de Frontenex, so obliged to follow Frank Thomas to end and turn left at small  roundabout and follow round to join onto  route de Vandoeuvres towards  traffic lights . Go for the ones for straight on (not the ones to turn right to Gradelle), up to large roundabout. Left into Cologny and then right at small roundabout onto route de la Capite. Straight on to roundabout to join Route de Thonon and into France at Veigy.

..sorry correction, it is at the end of ch Rieu you turn right onto the route de Malagnou for road leading to customs and La Route Blanche.

Straight ahead would be ch Amandollier, which you would follow over route de Chêne if you were going for route de Frank Thomas

Thank you kindly to all those helpful and friendly people who have responded.

We have no idea whether the hire car will have SatNav, but will send our son instructions to avoid the centre of town and deviate either via Lausanne and Villeneuve [pain but there you go] or otherwise as suggested, or perhaps even via Annemasse remembering that for him, he will be driving immediately after arrival on the other side of the road.

yes, there is the possibility of following the autoroute de contournement all the way into France via Perly then bfiurcating  shortly after the border to Turin/Milan/ Annemasse/ Chamonix/ Tunnel de Mont Blanc (l'Autoroute Blanche) It is  well signposted .Following this skirts the canton of Geneva, getting off at Annemasse, Etrembière. (same as mentioned above). Takes slightly longer but easy. esp when adapting to sides of the road

Thank you very much TogJay [as well as to the others]. Your suggestions is what we were thinking ourselves - it is probably best and saves going via Lausanne and Villeneuve, as our children have been many times before and know that area [Swiss Vapeur Park]!!!!!
