Geneva in summer - top tips?

Hi,

My name is Simon Bradley, an English journalist with www.swissinfo.ch. I’m compiling an article on Geneva locals’ top tips for summer – places to go, things to do, best bars, lake/riverside spots, restaurants, clubs, etc.

Any help with an original tip on your favourite lesser-known Geneva spot or activity in summer would be much appreciated… please share your recommendations, exact locations and details by commenting below, or send me an email to [email protected]

Many thanks

Simon

I sent this as an email, but figured I would post on here to, incase anyone wanted some ideas

Hire bicycles, cycle to Yvoire in France, stop for some fillet de peche then take the boat back to Geneva or Nyon with your bike on board
Hermance Jazz Festival - Jazz Sur Plage (also possible to cycle to, and put a tent on your back and camp very cheaply at the festival site)
Scuba diving in Lake Geneva
Windsurfing
Day trip and segway tour in Annecy France
Early morning concerts on Bain des Paquis
Cine Transat movies in parc pearl de lac
Live music at scene Ella Fitzgerald parc Geneva
Paleo and Montruex music festivals

Come to Evian-les-Bains and enjoy the beauty and diversity of our lakeside environment.

Wonderful Art Nouveau architecture, and a variety of restarants at much lower prices than those in neighbouring CH,  to name but two attractions. Mostly free parking too! especially on Sundays.

Olympic size swimming pool, vide greniers offering numerous bargains at the Parc Dolfus.

Take the wonderful old funicular from 1907 up to the top station and enjoy the views, have lunch or tea at La Verniaz Hotel, play tennis or go horse-riding close by.

For open-air patties: Les Voiles

For beach: Geneve Plage or Bains de Paquis

For ice cream: Manu Gelato

For rivers: take a kayak (or any other floating stuff) and go down the Rhone. Some parts are a little tricky tho, so not recommended for kids.

For some action: Evaux tree-top adventure parc

For a beer: La Terrase

For sport: Stand-up-paddle at Tropical Corner or/and wake boarding at Wake Sport Center

For the cheapest beers in town: Le Reposoir, incl. outstanding view to the Mont Blanc and a great beach (no dogs, but free showers)

Stand up paddle: Le Reposoir and Le Vengeron

http://ge.ch/eau/baignades-et-plages/acces-publics-au-lac/rive-droite/le-vengeron

Ice cream: Gelato Mania in Paquis or the new Italian shop from the Hotel Kempiski, L'epicier (ice cream to dream about. Cool )

A walk / run along the Rhone towards Satigny

And for the best view over Geneva: hike up the Saleve or take the Cable Car. (Bus No 8 takes you to Veyrier Douane)

Enjoy the summer. Cool

For those who like museums and collections, it’s hard to say where to start.  A few suggestions are:

Art & History Museum

Natural History Museum

Science Museum

International Red Cross & Red Crescent Museum

Ariana collection ( ceramics & porcelain)

Château de Penthes (recording exploits of Swiss who served other countries (including the only Swiss to have been awarded the British Victoria Cross).

Botanical Garden

Patek Philippe watch collection

Baur collection of oriental art

International History of the Reformation

The “Maison Tavel”

Martin Bodmer collection (plus a magnificent view of the lake from the terrace)

... and much, much more.

Have a look at my website where I chose the cheapest (or free) things to do. Most of the events come back every year :

I’d just like to add a comment about shopping in Geneva and that is to be adventurous and explore the side streets in the main shopping thoroughfares rather than just visiting the big stores because that’s where the Genevans go to find variety of choice and often, during the sales, real bargains.
