Helping New Gva Arrivals Find English Speaking Babysitters
I've been helping a lot of recent Geneva arrivals settle into life here. I'm pretty resourceful except in the area of finding English speaking babysitters ranging from part time days and/or nights - all the way to full time live-in or out nannies. Any ideas of how I can point new arrivals in the right direction? Thanks, Michele

The most comprehensive starting points I can track down on my own are http://www.newtogeneva.com/Frames%20Main/frame_living.htm
and http://www.cagi.ch/en/Creches_Garderies_Mamans_jour_Geneve.htm
and ftp.geneve.ch/dip/liste_creches.pdf (list of Geneva Daycare centers, or “Creches”)

CHILDCARE OVERVIEW
Finding the perfect childcare solution in the Geneva region is notoriously difficult. Nevertheless, if you’re resourceful, persistent, willing battling through with your pidgin French with someone else’s pidgin English, you’ll eventually find what you need.

Know-it-all Parents Geneva See Index: “Daycare and Babysitting” for the most comprehensive compilation of childcare options in Geneva, Vaud, and France Voisine. www.knowitall.ch

New To Geneva Online Advice for Obtaining Daycare and Babysitting This is a good starting point, but some informamiton is outdated. For example, “Little Angels” babysitting, nanny placement service no longer exists. http://www.newtogeneva.com/Frames%20Main/frame_living.htm

CRECHES (Full Time Day Car Centers)
Cr?ches are daycare / educational institutions for the children of working parents. They cost 9-12% of the parents’ salary, and are open weekdays from 7:30ish to 6:30pm-ish. There are a variety of cr?che options based on family situations.

Where to Find a Cr?che:

List of Geneva Region Cr?ches on the Internet : ftp.geneve.ch/dip/liste_creches.pdf and www.geneve.ch/dip/chreches.htm

Know-it-all Parents Geneva See Book Index: “Cr?ches” for more information and locations of garderies in Geneva and Vaud Cantons www.knowitall.ch

GARDERIES and Halt-Garderies (Part Time Childcare Centers)
Garderies are generally open 3 to 4 hours a day, 2 to 5 days a week, and accept children aged 2.5 to 5 years old. Cost can be up to 8CHF per hour. (Note: At lunch, you must pick up your child.)

Halt-Garderies in Geneva take children aged 3+ years for 2 to 5 hours a day. They are typically linked to a shopping center, and are open from 8:30am to 5:30pm during the week, and until 4:30pm on Saturdays.

Where to Find a Garderie:

Know-it-all Parents Geneva See Book Index: “Garderies” and “Halte-Garderies Geneva” for more information and locations of garderies in Geneva, Vaud Canton, and France www.knowitall.ch

MAMAN DE JOUR – (Day Care Mother – Part to Full Time In Her Home)
A certified maman de jour, day care mother, cares for kids age 2 months-12 years at her home, 1-5 days a week, either all day, ½ day, or outside school hours. She is permitted to care for one infant, and up to 6 toddlers/children. Considering mamans de jour are regulated by the Federation Geneve – Enfants pour l’Acceuil de Jour, this is the least risky option of childcare besides using a cr?che. Also, it is the cheapest @ 5 CHF per child per hour.

Know-it-all Parents Geneva See Book Index: Mamans de Jour for more information about finding a maman de jour in Vaud Canton and France www.knowitall.ch

Where to Find a Maman de Jour:

Federation Geneve – Enfants pour L’Acceuil de Jour 47, route de Mon-Id?e, 1226 Th?nex, 022 349-1111 (Office open weekdays, except Wednesdays 9am to 4pm, closed for lunch 11am to 2pm) Even if you do not speak French, give them a call and ask for someone in English to call you back. They may ask you where you live to find a maman de jour in your area. They, or the maman de jour herself will get back to you. www.geneve-enfants.ch or [email protected]

Pro Juventute 022-328-5584 – Mornings – They will provide a list of mamans de jour in your area.

MAMANS DE JOUR (Full Time In Your Home)
Priorit? Enfant 2 rond-point de Plainpalais, 1205 Geneva, 022-321-0277 – Priorite Enfant is the one agency in Geneva that will propose candidates to take care of your child at your home. These are usually young women around 25 years old who have had a fair amount of experience caring for young children. The agency recommends monthly salaries between 2,500 and 4,000 CHF. You will also need to take out accident insurance and, given the salary range, may need to contribute to a LPP pension fund. The agency will explain the details. Should you finally employ one of the candidates the agency suggests, you will pay the agency a fee set forth in the contract.
Au Pairs (Full Time and Living in Your Home)
An au pair is a girl who comes to a country primarily to learn a new language – minimum 4 class hours per week. She must be between 18 and 30 years old, a national from countries which traditional recruitment can be made (ie. EU and Scandinavia, US, and Canada, but not Quebec or France. Considering her age and commitment to studying French, she may function more like a foreign exchange student than hired help. For example, she will need access to transportation to and from her language lessons, and time off to attend, study, and have a social life. The younger girls may need guidance, understanding, support – or what essentially amounts to parenting. Further, while it is possible to ask an au pair to assist with light household chores, most feel that it is not a real part of their responsibilities. Be aware that 30 hours is an au pair’s maximum work week, and 18 months is an au pair’s maximum allowable stay in Switzerland. The minimum average salary is around 625 CHF per month. They are also require their own room, food, access to laundry facilities, and perhaps, a car to shuttle them to and from school.
Be careful, thoughtful, and clear with your expectations when recruiting an au pair. There will be work permit paperwork to take care of each year. An excellent article “Au Pair, Oh! Where?” can be found on page 84 of the 2005-2006 edition of Know It All Parents. Ask the Cantonal Population office for a “Demande Pr?able,” which is a request for permission to employ. It should take around 2 months to get a response.

NANNIES(Part to Full Time in Your Home)
Nannies may live in or live out of your home. When interviewing, make sure they show you a valid work permit and phone numbers of written references.. The more a nanny is willing to charge (20-25CHF per hour), the more likely her work permit is valid. Nevertheless, it is best to check. You don’t want your nanny playing in the park with your children, and not being able to provide a police officer with her work permit. (We all have to carry them at all times – Police can ask any of us at any time for our papers) By employing anyone without a work permit, you’re putting yours in jeopardy.

ITG helps mostly partners/spouses settle into Geneva. We have a guide called "Discovering Geneva" that has all sorts of good stuff for new arrivals. I'd be willing to take the P&G specific information out of it, and share it with GOL - It's an MSWord document - over 100 pages. Michele

Priorite Enfant is a bit expensive. There is another reputable company for this kind of services (baby-sitting, au pair and even cleaning staff) at Serado SA, rue de Montchoisi 40, 022 718 77 70.
