Mobile phone providers (prepaid, with internet)

Dear all,

I am looking for advice on mobile phone providers in Geneva that offer prepaid SIM cards with an internet connection. If possible, I would prefer to pay a fixed amount every month for the internet connection and pay for the calls/texts through prepaid cards. 500 MB a month would be preferable, but if necessary I could also do with less.

Is this possible? And if so, does anybody have tips on which providers to use (price/coverage/etc.)?

Thanks in advance!

It is possible with all providers I think but their offers change so fast that you would ned to check with them to see what they currently have. The main operators - Swisscom, Orange and Sunrise - have customer centers close to one another Geneva downtown so if you invest an hour of your time you will have all the answers.

I am a loyal subscriber of swisscom (15 yrs) so i'll say go for swisscom, they are the most expensive but the service is great!

Listed below are some of your options:

http://www.swisscom.ch/res/mobile/tarife/easy-befree/index.htm
http://shop.orange.ch/en/subscriptions+prepay/prepay/icat/prepay
http://www.migros.ch/fr/supermarche/marques-labels/m-budget/m-budget-mobile-prepaid.html
http://www.coop.ch/pb/site/mobile/node/70128149/Lfr/index.html
https://www.yallo.ch/kp/dyn/web/pub/content.do?cont=offers

or compare it with comparis.ch depending on your need:

I have been using Yallo prepaid for the last eight months and find the service/ covrage good.

And their 3G mobile connection is cheap and not that bad, though perhaps not comparable to Swisscom.

Lebara.ch

By far the cheapest compared to the other options.

4.90chf per month for 120mb data. from memory texts are 0.10 and various deals so for every dollar you top up they match it. Speed appears about the same as swisscom, but reliability isnt as good. They provide the service through sunrise.

But be prepared to configure your own phone and sort out any issues as they dont have a retail store and their call centre is pretty bad. But for that price you can understand why.

Outside of switzerland the costs go up quite a bit but you wouldnt be paying any more than with swisscom or the others. Or get a UK vodafone prepay which is pretty good for travelling throughout Europe.

Thanks everyone! That is very helpful.

Although Lebara seems to be the cheapest option, I don't think 120MB per month will be enough and I would prefer good coverage. Swisscom on the other hand is way too expensive. Does anyone have firsthand experience with Orange? Their prices seem alright.

It looked nice before posting.

Anyway, 59CHF per month with unlimited internet, text and calls included. I would just double check with them if calls/texts included are only to other swisscom phones or to all. There helpdesk speaks English. Think it`s 0800 - 800800

FOR SWISSCOM abo.

59/mo. SMS/CALLS are NOT free, this is an additional service of 8chf per month for 80 free sms. 1GB of data is the limit.

To maximize your data usage, use whatsapp or viber for SMS and CALLS. I assure you, you wont reach your data limit per month.

I switch to 75/mo. Liberty Largo starting this month with free 250 SMS, 1GB data plus internet speed of 1mbps.

I started with MBudget pay as you go and found the network and prices pretty good, just over 6 months ago I went on a contract with Orange as I needed an upgrade / e-mail on my phone etc. for work.

Since then I have had nothing but problems: the coverage in my flat is terrible (400m from Geneva train station), I constantly get messages saying I have missed calls and I have had extortionate roaming charges - 14chf / minute on one call!! The customer service is very bad too- I have complained several times but not been refunded the charges. Every bill comes to about double my monthly plan price (mostly due to roaming charges, I travel a few days per month)

After my 3rd complaint about the network Orange finally admitted there is a problem close to my home and agreed to release me from the contract with no cost. It is such a relief to be rid of them though I am waiting for the change back to MBudget now and won't believe it's the end of the problems until I have switched over and paid the final bill.

In short- if you are deciding which network you want please save yourself a lot of problems and avoid Orange. Swisscom / MBudget is great, I've heard decent reports about Sunrise too.

Also beware of Lebara / Lyca etc -the per minute rate is great but they charge a "call set-up fee" for each call- typically 28 cents so fine if you talk to someone abroad for an hour, not so good for a series of 20 second calls to other swiss phones.
