Hi,

I am currently looking for a friend of mine in Geneva for a good orthopedic specialized in ankle as she just had a severe sprain.

Many thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Try Dr Delmi Marino. Very individual 1:1 care.

With ankle sprain (especially repetitive) there is an underlying cause ..once that is addressed it will make more of a longer term difference hopefully.

And don't let any doc talk you down the operative route until all other options have been exhausted eg. physiotherapy, foot care products eg. heel/ insole, ice/ hot presees depending what the issues are.

I narrowly avoided that after seeing a fancy team team of 6 people at La Colline.  The appointment took twice as long even though I had only 10 minutes with the doctor and the conclusion seemed to be rather extreme (cutting my calf open).  It all felt a bit fussy and they missed a torn tendon in their scans.

I preferred the hands on , consultative, down to earth approach of Delmi and today, 2 years later I can jog again pain free and without being operated on.

Dear Lou,

Many many thanks for your recommendation. I have tried to call its secretary this morning and explained them the situation but they can't take my husband before beginning of April. That's too late as he need to be seen last week, so I will try to have a look at other doctors. In case, you would have other recommendations it would be highly appreciated :)

Have a very nice day

Hi Stephanie

Sorry you couldnt get an appointment with Dr Delmi- I also had to wait something like 3 months but if you explain to the secretary a) your husband is in pain (she will probably recommend you go to A&E but its worth a try) maybe she can put you in earlier or b) you can give her your number in case of cancellations?

It sounds like he needs treatment sooner so maybe you could go to A&E? I know its more time consuming butat least you can get an initial X-Ray done so you know the extent of the issue? Or insist on an MRI if you are covered.

The other specialist that comes up if you google 'Ankle specialist Geneva' is: Dr LUPS DEPLAINE Catherine Foot and Ankle Surgery Rue de Lyon 57
1203 Genève Tel. 022 345 15 40

She is associated at La Colline so she will be good. And if else fails try Dr Assal...

Dont leave it too long- as I did much to my regret later on- the problem will go from acute to chronic and then much longer road to recovery!

Good luck and let me know if I can be of any further help!

Re: Recommendation for an orthopedic specialized in ankle
Post 4

I went to Dr Assal  at the Colline just over a year ago with a sprain.

The MRI showed a possible frature according to the radiologist, that a generaliste booked me for before. I think unless you know a good generaliste, it's best to go directly to the Othopedic doctors for anything other than a simple sprain

He did look at the MRI but Dr Assal could tell, just by examining it that an operation was not necessary. I had a trouble free recovery.

As poor luck would have it, I then had a complicated fracture on the other ankle a couple of months later which I then had operated by him. Again good treatment.

I would definately recommend him.

He speaks several languages, good English among them. Worked in the USA.

In fact if he'll start off talking to you in English if he knows in advance

It's true that sometimes you have to wait. It depends on his schedule, however this is the case for many doctors here. With him it is because of his reputation.

If you are on the other side of Geneva, ring the Hopital de la Tour and ask  for their ankle specialsts. They have a good group of Orthopedists there.

For the A&E  you usually would have to wait longer there than in a doctor's waiting room.

Just to add , if you google Dr Assal you can get his Bio.

In cases of any condition or injury where operating is necessary he only works at the Colline though, so would have to check your insurance for that.

(Oh dear, wish there was an edit button..)

For consultations other than operation his fees are paid for by basic insurance

Hi Stephanie

Also would like to add that it may read above as if I am implying Dr Assal's services were less than professional. I want to make it clear that I am not suggesting that.  Simply that he told me there was no option for me but the operative route. And that physio would not make any difference. Whereas in fact it did- because I am running today without an operation but the use ofa  special supportive insole for 3 months and then exercises which I do regardless of ankle pain.

So based on my COMPARITIVE experience I preferred Dr Delmi.

Its horses for courses when it comes to doctors and if all else is the same then bedside manner can make the difference. Dr Assal seems like a very nice person but I can not overlook the fact that something obvious was missed by his team. And in some cases that are more extreme it takes more than just diagnosing by sight (even if in reality the doctor has seen the results on the scan).

All the best.,

Also some doctors are good at marketing themselves and others are good by word of mouth- I have a preference for the latter..

I see where you are coming from with your ankle. For me it wa a happier outcome.

With mine Dr Assal was able to test and examine it in a way which excluded that there could be a possible minor fracture, in the place where there was a doubt, which had not been the case with the generalist before.

The MRI was not too clear either a bit shadowed and a minor fracture was a query, not a given, on behalf of the radiologist for an orthpedic specialist to check out afterwards. When I told the radiologist  I would be going to Dr Assal,  he told me that he was known to be very competant and I was in good hands.

Dr Delmi is also known for his reputation, but does mostly elective surgery and operations these days. I  had thought about him but in my case needed to go very quickly to consult and could not wait for a later appointment.
