Slow cooker?

Hi all.  Crisp fall air is approaching and I am hoping to buy a slow cooker/crock pot before chili season has officially settled in.  However, I am hoping to avoid the insane prices of the typical Manor route. Has anyone seen slow cookers for sale around Gva?

Thanks!

A friend of mine found one at MaxiDiscount (Villereuse tram stop). Personally, I hand-carried both of mine back from the UK because I couldn't find them at all in Geneva at the time.

Good luck!

I always forget about that place, will definitely check it out.  That's funny, I also loaded my container in the US with kitchen gadgets when I moved (who wants to waste space on clothes when you can ship your cast iron skillets, etc instead?) but have actually never owned a slow cooker before and now I am hooked.

Thanks! Smile

Yes, but then I'll have you whinging in my kitchen for hours on end. I'd rather use the microwave.

Desiree, if you can, drive across the border to Carrefour (in Gex) or Darty (in Annemasse). I bought my slow cooker @ Carrefour when I moved here from the U.S. last fall. It is called "mijoteuse" or "mijoteur" in French. You don't have to splurge on a Krups -- there is a Kenwood model (#CP658) for 45-50 euros and Carrefour itself makes an affordable, most reliable slow cooker, too (the one I bought to replace my beloved Crock-Pot).

If you have a car I would recommend Geant Casino in Annemasse (Add: Géant Casino ANNEMASSE. 14 rue de la Resistance 74100 Annemasse) that has a good homewear section - there is also a fnac in the same building & next door is an electrical goods store called "Boulanger".

FREE Parking TOO! Laughing

Boulanger has a model by Essentiel B (i.e., their own brand) that is priced at 50 euros and a small (5L) Brandt mijoteuse for 43 euros. Everything else is more expensive than elsewhere (online or in a store). As for Géant Casino, they did not have anything that matched the quality or price of the Carrefour selection when I was looking for a slow cooker last year, but that may have changed. Finally, I should add that Fnac sells slow cookers exclusively online (if I am not mistaken)...

So apparently loads of people have slow cookers. I know sort of what they do. But i would be a bit paranoid to leave it on when im not at home for hours on end. Like leaving the oven on. And the food never burns? Please convince me i need to buy one as i really miss home cooked meals

Maria, slow cookers are safe. They are simply plugged into the wall like any other electric appliance (countertop or not) you may have in your home. Do you unplug everything in your house every morning before you go? I don't think so... The containers are usually tightly secured so the food can be steamed properly, which means spills or overboiling barely ever happen (I have never had to clean up any mess since I started using slow cookers 15 years ago). The heat is purposely low (75-135°C) so the meats can be tender and shrink less, including leaner or cheaper cuts; the cooker are also well insulated, so don't worry about burning yourself. Note that most recipes are done in 4-8 hours, depending on the selected heat setting, and then the cooker turns off to stay warm till you are ready to check on the contents...

You can slow-cook meals -- everything from delightful soups to mouthwatering desserts -- overnight or while you are at work (typically on high or low), and there are plenty of gourmet recipes out there now. Some people hear "slow cooker" and immediately think of indescribable, barely edible mushy rice-based mixtures, which of course do exist -- simply because not everyone can cook and having a Crock-Pot is not going to turn you into a gourmet chef all of a sudden... In fact, you can create phenomenal dishes for very nice dinners. Just to give you a few ideas:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/topics/slow-cooker/index.html

http://www.marthastewart.com/274310/slow-cooker-recipes/@center/854190/comfort-food-recipes

It is also nice (especially in the winter) to set aside an hour or two, just once a week, in order to prepare some meat, veggies, spices, etc. You can place everything in labeled three-liter freezer bags and throw those ready-to-cook meals into your freezer. Just thaw them out a bit and slow cook them when you know you are going to be too busy to spend time in the kitchen. You will save time AND make everyone happy!

Well Maria,

it was every friday night with the fraternity brothers in my University in Southern California. Everyweekend was always bad jokes on new members and others.

Beef, onion, breadcrumb, n canned dogfood burgers

Meatloaf = Beef, carrot, onion, egg, garlic, cut tommatos, black pepper/mustard/paperika (spices help with covering taste of dry dogfood (which was to replace the bread crumb/croutons) (later I because one of the leaders to make this lovely picnic initiation meatloaf treat) and it was always eaten by all including girlfriends. and told to all after it was finished. wow, 20 year ago was crazy n fun.

Snot n beer bongs

Beer n Jockstrap washing beer bongs

Italian MOB mafia party with mustaches, made from 'unmentionable hairs'

Always a crapy suprise for the new members and there girlfriends.

I got tricked with the Beer dogfood burgers and Snot beer bongs. It was not so bad, i was so drunk anyways and my initialting was done.

maybe more info than you wanted, bonne appetite.

Dave, what you saw was a pressure cooker (autocuiseur), not a slow cooker (mijoteur)... You really do need cooking lessons, don't you?

Sorry, Charlie! Foot in mouth Here is a REAL treat for your taste buds: a must-try this fall, provided you enjoy celebrating life with good food! You do not even need a programmable slow cooker to make this:

http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2011/03/spicy-dr-pepper-shredded-pork/

Serve with homemade sweet potato fries, cole slaw, thick (Texas-style) toast, and a huge smile!

Was wondering how people have been getting on with their slow cooking this Winter? Any great receipes to SHARE? Just got mine yesterday. I want to try the Dr Pepper pork (mentioned above) but think I might start with something else for first attempt Tongue out

Found many receipes on many websites - but wanted some real recommendations. So if anyone is willing to share please let me know. Can't wait to get started!

Thx

You can find some great recipes here: http://www.reddit.com/r/slowcooking

It's a subsection of Reddit. If you're not familiar with it the site may seem a bit strange to you, but it's an excellent place to get advice.
