Hello,

I have recently moved to Geneva from London. I used to play TT at a competitive level and would love to practice regularly. Looking for a intermediate to higher level player and a club to practice in Geneva. Any help is much appreciated.

Hello, Gis!

I am looking for the same. I am not fully sure about the level but the best way to find out is to try.

As I mentioned before, I am free to play after 19:00 - any part of "Rive Droite" district of GVA - Grand/Petit Saconnex, Meyrin, Vernier, Chatelaine, etc. (or others but it will take me more to get to place)

Let me know if you are interested!

Well, it seems that we've got small group already here. Lets try to find some places to play. Indoor, after 18:00 or during weekends.

Do we have to sign with a club or something or can we just pop in at a club?

I think for regular play we will need to sign up and pay once for a year (something about 80-150 CHF). Good thing that after you don't pay anything.

I'd suggest to start with Balexert, cuz it has good location and transport links.

The name of the club is: CTT CHATELAINE

Address is:

Ecole de Balexert
Avenue de Pailly 15 1219 Le Lignon

According to the information from agtt.ch they are opened:

Lundi 19H00 / 22H00   7 tables   Max : 2 Mts(19:45)
Mardi 19H00 / 22H00   7 tables   Max : 2 Mts(19:45)
Mercredi 19H00 / 22H00   7 tables   Max : 2 Mts(19:45)
Jeudi 19H00 / 22H00   7 tables   Max : 2 Mts(19:45)
Vendredi 19H00 / 22H00   7 tables   Max : 2 Mts(19:45)
Samedi 19H00 / 22H00   7 tables   Max : 2 Mts(19:45)
Dimanche 19H00 / 22H00   7 tables   Max : 2 Mts(19:45)

We need to ask them if we can just come for the first time and play without joining their club and then decide. Whoever speaks a bit of French, could you call them:

Président : Dupuis Stéphane TP:022 771 26 59
Resp Technique : Souiller Frank Natel:076 302 79 77
Caissier : Uy Nguyen Natel:077 411 31 92

I've got email from one of the representative of Chatelaine CTT:

Dear Sergei,

i'm the technical president of the club. The club is opened each day from monday to friday. The best evening to play is the friday because it's the only one whitout championship. It's free training, you can come this friday, you are wellcome. The level is rather high but if you come with friends it will be ok. There is enough room ( 8 tables ).

I'll be there from 20h00 up to 23h00 playing with my team parteners.

Hope to see you all on friday :-)

(It's free for 2-3 sessions and after that if you are interrested then you'll get a paper to fill in the form.) 80.-/ year only!

Unfortunately this Friday I'm off Geneva, but maybe some of you will go.

Although, as discussed earlier on this evening, I will still look for 1 or 2 other clubs just to compare.

all the clubs are here: http://www.agtt.ch/web/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=74&Itemid=22

I have found only one alternative which seems better comparing to Chatelaine CTT - it is CTT Silver Star. They have 12 tables and more space according to pictures. All details here: http://www.agtt.ch/web/images/stories/page_des_clubs/silver_star_pagedesclubs20102011siteagtt.pdf

As you can see it more expensive: 250 CHF for annual subscription

Dear all,

After reading quoted post, in particular the "regular activity" part, I believe table tennis in Switzerland needs some clarification.

It is not like you can go on a weekly basis with 10 people to a table tennis club. It is not like playing pool at La Sphere!!!

You can try 2 or 3 times for free but after that you'll need to become a member. With a membership you can go there as much as you like ofcourse. You also don't have to organise something, you just go there and see who's there to play with. Of course you're completely free to call some of your member mates to arrange something, but usually you'll go on a fixed date. Although the TT club in Chatelaine does welcome recreational players, we were asked what level we are playing and if we are interested in joining the competition. tey actually have a lot different teams in all different levels.

You see, posting it weekly on Glocals as a members activity isn't a real good idea with this one Wink

I played this evening at Meyrin CTT and it was a free training today by chance , they have more than 50% mainly English speakers working at Cern and UN's (which i found it cool as i dont speak French yet) ... the responsible people were also very nice and very friendly...and i felt they are interested in players going for licence and playing tournament representing the club.

The place i found it little bit better , bigger and more tables than balexert.

There is a free training on Tuesday and Friday.

Let me know Arnovd & Sergey if its interested you to check it ... unfortunately i will not be in Geneva this Friday :( ... enjoy guys

Cheers,

Abdul

Haaa! Totally different locations! Thanks, Abdul!  ^_^

It seems all the places you proposed are around UN, quite far to me. It takes at least 1 hr for me to go home after.

Anyway, I will try to find shop to buy me a bat this weekend and try to join you next coming Tuesday.

Of course, it will be highly appreciated to know if any places for table tennis around these places below:

Geneve Train Station
Rive
Genève Plainpalais
Chêne-Bourg
Gaillard
Annemasse.

Merci beaucoup et bonne journée

Yes of course I love playing table tennis, but now I'm playing with my friend at his office not at the club. If you want, we can make appointment to playing together. So if I playing at your club, is that must be pay or not? Thank you.

I'm player of CTT Meyrin for several years. I play often on Tuesday at 18h to 19h30 and hop, I go to play badminton in another club from 20 to 22h.

Effectively, there are a lot of players who speak English in this club.

If you want, we can make an appointement at 18h. For first times, you don^t need to pay. If you come more offen, you pay 130 frs for a year.

Hi Gustav

I saw your message on the forum re table tennis in Geneva. I'm new to the city too, having just moved from the UK to start a new job here. I'd be keen to join you to play table tennis - I used to not bad, but that was a while ago, and might be a bit rusty!

Let me know if you're interested.evenings Sun-Thurs, but am free until 1500 everyday and all day Friday/Saturday.

Best wishes

Andrew

P.S. ich lerne Deutsch auch; ich wollte in der Schweiz wohnen, um mein Deutsch (und Franzosisch) zu verbessern , aber ich kann nicht die Leute hier verstehen!

^^ so, i thought that was a private message - that'll teach me to type on a tiny phone screen. Thank goodness I didn't put my phone number there!

But the point stands; I'd be keen to find people to play with as well, though it's been a while since I played competitively. I'm especially interested in meeting French/German speakers who don't mind my butchering of their language whilst we play ;)

Nobody understands the German they speak here. Go to Oberwallis and listen tp people from Zurich/Bern trying to undersgtand the locals.  I have seen German subtitles on TV newsprograms/documentaries.

German people (real ones as opposed to Swiss ones) say it takes between 3 and 6 months to be able to converse and understand easily.

Not knocking the Swiss Germans as I find it fantastic that they are able to keep the dialects (language?) going.  But iot it is not very useful outside Switzerland, Sud Tyrol, Western Austria and Bavaria

Sounds like somebody made some bad experiences...let me tell you, it's a great way to make new friends fast if you tell them you know some Swiss-German (-"Oh really? Come on, say it!" -"Chuchichäschtli!" -"Oooh haha. Okay, let me buy you a beer"). ;)

@Andrew: Other than that, I do speak what Paul would probably consider "real German" (never tell that to anyone around here), so I'd be happy to help out and play some tabletennis along the way. I'd be free on weekends, and any other day from 6pm onwards. So let's find a suitable date, and I'll gladly topspin you off the table ;)
