Working as a Doctor in Geneva

Hi

I have been in Geneva for a few weeks now and am trying to get a better understanding of the medical system here. I am a junior doctor in the UK but would like the opportunity to work in Geneva short or long term.

Can anyone tell me how doctors get into specialist training positions here after graduation? Also - are there many temporary (locum) posts available? In the UK there is loads of locum work so you can work for short periods of time.

I speak French and English

Thanks for your help!

Hi Hemani, my husband is also a junior doctor who recently found work in Switzerland (canton of Vaud). He simply researched hospital wards he was interested in working for and sent a CV and cover letter to the chief of each ward. He was invited to a few interviews and accepted the best offer! He'll be a 'medecin-assistant' in a specific ward, on track to become a specialist after a certain number of years.

I'm sorry I can't give you more detail than that, and I don't know anything about temporary posts, but it can't hurt to send out some feelers and see what happens. Good luck!

Hi Kelcey

Thanks so much for your reply it was really helpful. What does he want to specialise in and where did he graduate from? What does he think of the level of teaching he receives?

I feel like the system in the UK is so great for training that I want to stay there and complete my training before moving but it's difficukty to assess as I know so little about the system here in Switzerland!

He doesn't start for another couple of months so I guess he doesn't have very strong opinions about Swiss medicine yet, but he recommended this site to answer your questions:

Hope that helps!
