top 10 movies

So, i recently find myself with a bit too much time on my hands (evidently), and have decided that, having gone through my dvd collection again, the top 10 movies of all time are as follows...

1. Godfather Part 2,

2. Shawshank redemption

3. Scarface

4. An affair to remember

5. 12 angry men

6. Anchorman

7. It's a wonderful life

8. Sound of music

9. Forrest Gump

10. the dark knight...

Anyone got any other recommendations for me?

Lynds x

I like this thread, reminds me of great movies I almost forgot about.

I couldn't agree more with those who mentioned War of the Roses, True Romance, Scarface, and SuperBad. If you havn't seen those, go see em!

And a GREAT one to add to the list: Life of Others. In German but with English subs. EXCELLENT.

Farz: so what's this "time for drunken horses" movie, and is it in English?

Mesut:

Excellent picks on Carandiru and Amores Perros.

Which also reminds me of another great one: Requim for a Dream (same main actor as Amores).

Great picks, Mesut.  Motorcycles Diaries, Amores Perros and Carandiru are true classics!

A few others I enjoyed watching, that haven't come up yet (I think),

11) Frida

12) Malena, Italian

13) The Cheech & Chong series, esp. Up in Smoke

14) Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

15) Pixote, Brazilian

16) Sholay, Indian - Hindi

17) KungFu Hustle - a hilarious parody on all Kungfu movies ever made!

There're many many more, but I've used up a lot of space already. :)

This is not in any order...

1. Man on Fire (by far the best Denzel Washington movie)

2. Shawshank Redemption (great choice Lynds, Morgan is a genius)

3. Scarface (classic)

4. Michael Clayton ("I am the guy you pay", Sydney Pollack and George Clooney at their best)

5. Belly (dark, ugly, gritty, urban mess)

6. The entire 6 movies of the Star Wars Saga

7. All the Pretty Horses (I don't know why I like this move, early Penelope Cruz and Matt Damon

8. Oceans 11, 12, 13

9. Quantum of Solace (grittiest, most physical James Bond ever).

10.  Lord of the Rings trilogy

I have a lot of DVDs (US versions probably).... we should start a DVD exchange!

Which movie to see depends on the personal taste and mood, but there are films that one cannot miss:

Casablanca (1942)

2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick, 1968)

Goldfinger (1964) and the other 007 movies with Sean Connery starring as James Bond

North by Northwest (1959) or other films by Alfred Hitchcock

Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982)

The Dollars Trilogy by Sergio Leone

The Star Wars trilogy/hexalogy by George Lucas

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Steven Spielberg, 1977)

And a few more amongst my favourites:

The Omega Man (1971) -- watch this one instead of the crappy remake I Am Legend (2007)

Planet of the Apes (1968)

The Matrix (1999)

Barry Lyndon (Stanley Kubrick, 1975)

The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003) by Peter Jackson

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex - But Were Afraid to Ask (1972) and almost any other Woody Allen film, with preference for the old ones

Groundhog Day (1993)

The Pink Panther (Blake Edwards, 1963) and the other movies with inspector Clouseau / Peter Sellers

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1971)

Saving Private Ryan (Steven Spielberg, 1998)

Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa, 1954)
