Amazon.co.uk beats every book store in Switzerland in terms of price and convenience. Make sure that whenever you order the value stays below 60 CHF, so you don't pay import duty.

Book stores are probably the only kind of shop that I really enjoy entering, and I can easily spend hours there looking for interesting books. But it doesn't make sense to buy in book stores any more; the price difference is too big (at least 2x, often 4x) , and the convenience of Amazon (availability, ratings, recommendations) makes book stores redundant.

Don't forget bookdepository.co.uk - same prices as Amazon, if not cheaper AND post free anywhere in the world!

I bought a kindle. Being an avid booklover I thought I would hate it , but I would not be without it.

Amazon and Kindle are fine if you want to live in a world without bookstores. I am not sure this is worth the few bucks you might save online.

Many of my customers come to the store for their book club, literary event or to find out what is happening in their community. Some of them only buy what I recommend. They do not affix a dollar amount to the benefits they receive.

Many Swiss bookstores are offering great deals on books due to the favourable exchange rate.

It makes me wonder when I read, 'I can easily spend hours there looking for interesting books....Bookstores are redundant'. Really, it does.

Hi,

Join the library!

http://www.lausanne.ch/view.asp?DomID=64286

the main one is near Pont Chauderon and has a good selection of english novels, there's others too - i often go to Montriond since it's nearer my work and there's plenty there too.  I found it also handy when learning french to take out some kids books (try Petit Nicolas) or comics like Asterix or Tintin which are quite easy reads.

I think to join you need to take ID, maybe also your work permit. But I've always found the staff v friendly too, and the opening hours are fine too for going after work.

Enjoy!

Alice
