Dentist

Is it cheaper to have dental work done in Lausanne or Evian (France)?  If so, how much cheaper?  A lot?  And if so, can anyone recommend a good dentist in Evian?

Cheers!

Hi,

Yes it is much cheaper in Evian, but I would recommend to go to Divonne or Ferney, it is almost the same time and distance. About particular doctor, there were several topics with recommendations.

This forum has been around a lot in many shapes and forms, so I can advise (from personal experience) the following:

Switzerland has a "points/unit" system set out by the Government and each piece of dental work carries a certain number of points/units.  Dentists are allowed (I think, but someone will correct me if wrong) to charge between 3 and 5 francs per point/unit.  For example, a simple filling could be 20 "points/units" and a crown 250 "points/units".

So the "point/unit" price will vary from dentist to dentist.

However, over in France, Evian and Divonne, as suggested, and even in the UK - dentists can charge what they like.  Dentists in Divonne (save the boat fare to Evian) are aware of the crazy Swiss system and offer very good rates.

It doesn't mean that they're very good dentists, however. Only several different opinions and check ups can determine that.

Something I learned at the weekend, however (thank you Burnei), is that your Swiss Insurance will pay out for dental bills (if you have the appropriate cover) for dental work carried out outside of Switzerland (it saves them money, it saves you money) as long as you can provide a full, itemised, receipt.

So some things worth considering.

I personally, have very good dental insurance and an excellent dentist, in the UK, so its worth the Easyjet flights twice a year.

Otherwise you may wish to consider dentists in Divonne and ask for recommendations to find a good dentist.

Or if you feel like a nice day out on the boat, go to Evian.

Either way, I hope you find a good dentist and manage to share it with us all here.

Don't spare the boat fare! Come to sunny Evian. Recommended Dr. Marc Perret only 30 seconds from the port. Whether the charges vary from dentist to dentist is from our experience of living here in Evian for 5 years not quite correct. But there again, if someone knows better no doubt they will type in a correction.
