Martin Solveig (Martin Picandet) is French...OMG!!!! I find him far superior and cleverer to David Guetta whose stuff I find too eurodisco/earwormy for my taste no matter who is yelling it.
My goodness, though, no one has mentioned Serge Gainsbourg along with those other shlock-meisters, Claude François and Johnnie Halliday (Oppppp-tic Deux Millllllllllle).... 
I think another of Brel's best is Ne Me Quitte Pas.... The way he sings "Don't Leave Me" is powerful and pathetic...Nina Simone sang a great version of that as well...
