Living in Geneva
Now in its 13th edition (January 2004), this remains the best guide on how to move, settle and do just about everything in Geneva. Even long time residents find things they did not know in it. An indispensable pocket guide for all, there is information on shopping, transportation, banking, postal, medical, religious and social services, and entertainment among other things in Geneva, Vaud and neighboring France.
CHF 30.

that sounds great...but i was thinking more along the lines of fiction or non fiction that explains a little history or gives background to cities or explains a little about culture. maybe even a modern swiss author who is well loved in switzerland and then has been translated into english - just to give some insight in modern thought.

thanks for the hint though ill be sure to read that!

That's the title of the book, BTW ;-)

Jonathan Steinberg
Cambridge University Press
2nd edition
ISBN 0 521 48170 8

Gives a sweeping overview over history, social fabric, and even explains "why Switzerland matters."

"Off the Shelf" should be able to order it for you.

As I said, Geneva is the setting of my own novel An Old-Fashioned Arrangement and this should give you a flavour of the city. It does feature some of the culture in very small doses, i.e. there is talk of Escalade, and the heroine goes to the Red Cross Museum and even the UN Women's Guild Bazaar! www.transita.co.uk

Bergli books also stock cross-cultural titles such as Ticking Along with the Swiss and Ticking along Too. Most of the contributors live in the German part of Switzerland, which is a little different, but the collected articles are amusing.
