Grad Student in Bern, soon to be intern in Geneva!

Hello Everyone!

I am a Gambian/British and have previousely lived in the Gambia, UK, Canada and Kenya.

I am about to finish my Masters in Bern and will start an internship in Geneva in September!

I hope i will get the opportunity to meet some new incredible people!

I need advice though-

I heard GVA is quite expensive, how much is required to survive?

where are the best areas to live? not expensive but still close to amenities!

Any interns in the forum? Wha is life like as an intern in GVA? How is the social life?

Thanks and looking forward to hearing and hopefully meeting some of you!

Hi Sai,

I hope that you will have a nice time in GVA. I live in Bern but I work for a NGO in GVA so I'm in GVA during the week and in BE during the week-end.  Geneva is quite expensive for the apartments and is very dificult to find something. If you need some information about GVA please don't hesitate to contact me.

Regards, Gonçalo

Hello Sai

The best maxim for Geneva is "think of a number and double it". Might be best for you to live just over the border in neighbouring France - we do!!

Really?

What areas at the border would you recommend especially with regards to easy access to Geneva. Do you know how long it would take to travel to work e.g. to the WTO?

Merci!

Not really, as we are now retired and live in [paradise] Evian-les-Bains which is too far to commute to Geneva on a daily basis. But there are others on this excellent website who will know more than us. Every time we go across the border, the prices take our breath away! But then, the people in GVA are normally earning loooooooooots of money!

I am also doing an internship at the moment in Geneva

A lot of interns live in Ferney-Voltaire or around that area, which is on the French side of the border and right next to the airport, and thus very close to the UN area.  You can take a bus from there that goes straight to the UN as well.  Anything you can find on the French side closest to the UN is going to be convenient.

When I first got here however I lived in Annemasse, which is also in France but on the complete opposite side.  It is very cheap there but the commute time using public transportation could very well take over an hour one-way, depending where in Annemasse you stay.  It is a more viable choice if you have a car.

A place in Geneva will cost you anywhere from 700-1200CHF/mo for a room in an apartment to ~2000-3000CHF+/mo for your own place (most places also require deposits and 1-2 months rent up front).  Dormitories cost less. Scams are common, do not give people money until you have met them in person.
