Hello from Biel/Bienne
Greetings from Biel-Bienne!

I discovered this site through Glocals.com co-founder Nir Ofek. I basically joined the network to try out its features (for a possible blog post). It would be nice to hear some feedback from the Glocals.com members for some "quotables."

And yes, if anyone of you knows where one can buy a wide collection of English books (both new and secondhand) in Switzerland, please let me know. I would really appreciate it.

And are there nice book clubs in Bern?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,

The best place that I have found for new books in english is Payot. www.payot.ch

They have shops over Switzerland but I did not see one in Biel, sorry. There is also the English Library here in Geneva that loans books primarily but also has a book sale (they just had one I am afraid).

Thanks, Mr. Scientist, for the info. I didn't know that there are Glocals.com members from my town. I seldom meet English speakers here.

I like your username. It sounds like you're doing something really important. :-)

Thanks for the wonderful lead (http://payot.ch), James. I just checked the site now. It's my first time to hear about this online shop.

I got to know about the Geneva-based English Library through this site as well (while browsing through the forums). It seems to be a great place! Too bad Geneva is too far from Biel.

Hey Jay-Anne,

Welcome to glocals; great to see you here!

As per your profile's travel story: you're worth atleast 25 camels, so I'm glad your family didn't settle for the offer of only 20 camels! :)

Enjoy the community!

Nir

http://www.play.com/

is in the channel islands and doesnt charge for postage to Switzerland.   You need to pay in euros (only pounds sterling if you live in the UK) but it still works out cheaper than buying books in Geneva and takes about a week to get here!

http://www.amazon.de/

is another possibility.  It has a specific section for English books and also doesnt charge for postage to Switzerland - but you need to wade through the German to order... : )

Graeme,

To me, you're important, despite those letter ('E' 'X' - 'C' 'O' 'N') that I've often seem coming after your name.

Hi, Nir. Thanks.

But I don't know if I should be happy with your 'compliment.' You see, an English-speaking Berber in Morocco told me last year that I was worth 5,000 camels! :-)

I signed up here yesterday to get a feel of what glocals.com is all about. (It seems to me that you've achieved your goal.) Thanks for the lead.

Graeme, you're too modest. Those "long list of letters after your name" do mean something. (How was life in jail? LOL at Nir's comment.)

Seriously, thanks for the tip on how to find Bielers who are glocals.com members. I'm actually just here for "research purposes" and testing how this site works.

Payot sounds funny.

Many thanks, Mozambique! Wow, I've never heard of http://play.com. I like their free delivery service. Since I'm big on DVDs (I buy lots of DVDs at Weltbild) and books, I guess I really have to try out this site. As for Amazon.de, I heard that there are English books available there but not much (my friend ordered me some Swiss novels translated in English from Amazon.de). I did try to order a DVD there to check out how fast they deliver. Wading through the German language is something that can really try my patience. However, I do have some basic High German knowledge so it's bearable.
