I am also thinking about taking my English bulldog with me)))but apparently it will be even more hard to find an apartment where pets are allowed...so if you come across such Landlords please let me know :-)

Hi Allane,

you are VERY RIGHT to be cautious!

do NOT trust anyone who asks for payment in advance!
scams DO lure at every corner... particularly for newcomers, but not exclusively...

do NOT trust any ads with 'incredible' low prices... they are placed only to lure foreigners looking for places from far away... (Cost of living in Switzerland, Geneva in particular, is VERY high. Low prices do not exist)

Most likely, the best approach would be to arrive -without your Golden- no matter how heart breaking that is... I do understand...

How about, taking a room at a hotel for a few days, then locating some suitable (very likely temporary) accommodation for you... and then searching for your real home for you and your Golden R.... Being here would let you identify which are the pet-friendly neighbourhoods.... and also the conditions.

DO NOT be discouraged!  It is not an impossible exercise, but finding any kind of accommodation in Geneva, including surroundings, is a major challenge (as you can read from the numerous threads on the subject)

crossing fingers for you!

keep us posted.

Try www.immostreet.ch.

We found our apartment through it a few years ago. Usually there are real estate agencies behind the adds. So, everything will be done by the book. The landlord will have to approve your dog (we have golden too )))

Good luck

Welcome to Geneva region. My name is Anh Tho and I am from Vietnam but am in the region for more than 25 years ago.

I would suggest that you discover Geneva with Genevatourism guide. You can find it at the big POST OFFICE building by the railway station.

There are also a lot of associations of Malaysians, Filipinos, Vietnamese who organise some social outings, it could be fun for you to join.

You may want to visit my websites:

1. to learn Vietnamese language and culture under www.pont-du-pacifique.ch (all in French) and maybe make a discovery trip to Vietnam which I organise once a year.

2. to learn more about doing business with asia under www.myvietnamexpert.com

3. to find an english-speaking therapists under www.asest.ch

4. to find out more about courses at the UBIS under www.ubis-geneva.ch. I am a lecturer at that University.

A personal message to you Allane,

Hope you get more friends and enjoy your new life in Switzerland.

If you do not find a flat in Geneva, don't get discouraged. You may try to find flats outside Geneva, Nyon, Rolle, Gland and commute like the rest of us. Trains are punctual and you can get monthly abo for about average 4Sfr a day from Nyon to Geneva without hassle. Housing are cheaper outside Geneva. I never experience these bad stories so consider I am lucky. But all big cities have their burden to bear. Switzerland as a whole is a nice and peaceful country. And we should consider ourselves very lucky to still find a haven of peace in the turmoils of this crazy world.

Best,

Anh Tho
