New in Geneva area and looking for nice people to hang out with!

Hi everyone!

I'm new in the Geneva area and would love to get to know some nice people around here. I'm working as an au pair and will be staying til end of June next year, so plenty of time to get to know each other!
Would be great if we shared a few interests, however anyone's welcome to contact me. I like running, skiing, photography, drawing, reading, music, films and hanging out with people. I also happen to be slightly obsessed with sci-fi and fantasy things.

Oh and might be worth mentioning that I'm 20 years old and from Sweden. However I do speak fluent English, and understand quite a bit of French. So anyone who knows Swedish, English or French would be preferred as we then can communicate ;P

Looking forward to hearing from you!
Helena

Welcome to Geneva  :)

...from someone who is a veteran of living in Geneva for a whole three weeks!

I have never met anyone from Sweden before, so I figured that by being an Australian it'd be fun to meet someone from possibly the furthest away country...except maybe Iceland.

Oh and I speak Aussie, which is like English but with more swear words...but I can always tone them down :) I am trying to learn French but only know the very basics. Apparently the 'h' is always silent Foot in mouth

Hoppas att vi ses sen,

Thanks! Well we've been here for about the same time then haha
Well, as I've never met anyone from Australia before either, it'd be fun to meet someone from possibly the furthest away country too!
Should be able to understand Aussie then, and I think I'll cope with the swear words haha
Trying to improve my French too, and am currently looking for French classes in Geneva. Apparently they all seem to be taught in French which is a bit worrying haha. So would be nice talking to someone who speaks my second language instead of third. A bit easier that way!

Swedish sentence much appreciated, even if I suspect it came from google translate ;)

People here actually think I'm English as I don't have a thick Aussie accent haha.

When I go back to Australia (for a couple of months in October before starting a PhD) I will do some intensive French courses, which will be taught in English luckily. I'd imagine you'd learn a lot of they were taught in French but as a beginner it could be quite tough. There seem to be ads on here for private tutoring though and the prices seemed reasonable :) I paid more for drum lessons back home hehe.

Hopefully we'll be able to communite in French some day, but I'm happy with English for now! I'd love to learn a bit of Swedish too, you know, for fun!

And how could you tell?!?!? I actually went one better than Google translate, as in I googled the phrase and found a Swedish speaker who did a translation. I hope it was accurate hehehe.

Ciao (I'm working at an Italian telescope at the moment)

Hi Helena,

I`m also new here and I also work as an au-pair (till August next year). I usually have the weekends of (also the evenings), so if you would like to meet sometime, just let me know.

I am going to attend a French course at Ecole Ifage, which is next to the tram station Augustins. It´s a beginner course.

I like music, sports (skiing, dancing, running), movies, etc.

Ciao

Kristin

Hey, I'm a 20 year old newbie in Geneva as well and would love to meet some people, I also have a basic level French which I really want to improve, would be great to meet up for some practice Helena, and potentially do a French course together if you're interested? And anyone else?

Hello to the new people who have joined this thread :) Seems that we have a few poms (or half pom in your case Saleem)

I reckon some French courses sound good! When I come back for a PhD next year (I am still in Geneva at the moment though) it'll be handy to know more than just how to ask for the price of cheese. I mean...that's handy but somewhat limited in an academic environment.

How long are you staying in Geneva Nikki and Shifra? I see you're here for a while Saleem making a new start!

ps: I wish I were an AU pair so I could have joined the AU pair karaoke night and embarrassed myself thoroughly.

Unfortunately Australians are not very good at spelling and logically it should be pohm. A prisoner of her her majesty.  The founders of modern Australia were convicts sent out their for the heinous crimes of stealing a loaf of bread. Those who acually read Oliver Twist rather than watch the musical will know that the artful Dodger ended up there.

What that says about today's Australians is another subject but beware when in a food shop.

Back to the point. They were sent out as prisoners of her majesty but did rather well out of it and reveresed the term, applying to us iunfortunates who were left there.

On a more general note I see posts above of people who are desperately looking for friends or such. I would have thought the easiest way would be tpo join a group or club - you can always 'unjoin' and that way you will meet people with similar interests.

Clubs are not jus restricted to the glocals website.

I remember the first Sunday I spent here. I could not believe how boring it was (and in fact not just the first Sunday) It took me a couple of months before I started to get to know people. I just threw myself into my work and went back to England every two weeks.   There was no glocals then.  Life has become much easier but I know plenty of people (not just Swiss) who have nver heard of glocals.  So life does exist

Hi David

I am indeed a Pohm but my Father is from your neck of the world; all the way from NZ!! I'm working here till November, but I do like it very much, so I hope to find another job to take me to July before going back to school.

What are you studying and do you have any idea if its possible to study for a degree in Switzerland in English??

Nikki, the French course is at Ecole Club Migros in central Geneva, and it's a B1 course. Not sure how good your French is, but mine isn't great and seems to be an alright level for me haha. Also it ends around middle of November so will finish before you go home then! :) and great that you love skiing!!

Hey Andréanne!

I'd love to meet up some time, both to practise some French but also just to talk really :D I'm more fun talking to  in English than French as I'm much better at English haha. Do you live in Geneva?

Hey Helena!!

Yes I live in Geneva, in Chêne-Bougeries. It's not directly in the center, but I manage well with the tram and my bike! :) Where do you live? And you work as an Au pair? That's really cool!! How long have you been in GVA?

I live in Veigy, takes about 20 minutes by car to get into Geneva, or I take the bus, but I go there several times a week :) Yeah I do work as an au pair, and it's pretty nice actually :D And lots of free time haha. I've been here for a bit over two months :) Although three weeks out of that I had to spend in south of France with my host family, so I haven't actually been around Geneva for that long!
