New to Geneva - Weekend/Day trips

Hello,

I'm moving to Geneva in July for 6 months for an Internship. I love sailing, windsurfing and mountain biking and would like to take advantage of my surroundings while I'm here!

I won't have a car but I would really like to take a trip to the Alps to go mountain biking/hill walking for a day or a weekend. I'm pretty much a beginner on a mountain bike. Does anyone have any tips on places and how to get there?

Thanks, Jill

To start with, check out this site: http://www.mountainbikeland.ch/en/welcome.cfm

This will give you an idea about where to go and what trails there are.

Getting around by public transport is quite easy here, timetables are on www.cff.ch. For cheaper tickets, think about getting a half-price card (abonnement demi-tarif), it's for a year but even if you're here only 6 months it will be worth it. Other options are the supersaver tickets that you buy online from the cff site, or the "cartes commune" which are daycards for public transport in the whole of Switzerland for 35CHF, sold at the city tourist office to residents of the city: http://www.ville-geneve.ch/demarches-administratives/mobilite/carte-journaliere-cff/ Buy them well in advance for weekends! People also re-sell those tickets on www.ricardo.ch or ebay.

Have fun and welcome!
