I am moving over from the UK to start work in Geneva in a few weeks and I need to open a swiss bank account.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to which bank I should use?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thank you very much guys.
Depends what you need. If you need just basic services and French communications is not a prob, post finance is good. If you want English service, online trading, and excellent e-banking, UBS is a better choice. But it's more expensive.

I'm a big fan of the Cantonal banks. They really serve their customers well and have easy to use, state of the art online banking apps.
At UBS, to have a USD account for example costs 6$ per month (!)

post finance is now a bank ( since june 2013) and not only offers all the services of a bank, but will be the first to have their plastic card ( free of charge ) with NFC - wireless payment facility- Near Field Communications. you can receive all information on line and in E, F, D,I for online transactions.

Migros bank gives the best rates for almost everything, and the service is good.
But it's only in French, German or Italian, so the best rates are not available for everyone. (Yet another tax on people who can't be bothered, or other excuses...)
By the way, I challange anyone to challenge me on the rates statement above. Interested to know if anyone gets a better mortgage or interest rate with the same conditions.

I am with Raiffeisen, have been for nearly two decades, and I am super happy!

thanks again
Postfinance has service in English too and the online website is available in English, though the service in English may be less than what UBS offers. Migros definitely has great rates. I don't have an account at Migros, but would consider it too.

Hi Ayrana - what are good with Migros? What does it mean the rates are good? thanks.

oh, by best rates I meant credit card and credit rates. I don't know about their fees for service. But if you need just a bank for your money and you don't plan to use credit, Postfinance, UBS, regional banks - they are all good. postfinance and UBS have branches in many cantons, so that's a definite advantage.

I'm from the UK too, I initially opened up a postfinance account and it does all the basic things, lets you get paid into it, you can use it at the post office...but when i came to socialising and trying to use it at restaurants and some bars, they refused the card and i had to go out and get cash. if thats fine with you, then stick to post finance as its a cheaper.
For myself, I hardly ever carry cash so i tend to use my card everywhere so a cantonal bank is probably more useful. you'll also find that for a small charge you can have a seperate account thats in sterling/euros/USdollars, which comes in handy if you are planning to stay in geneva on a long term basis.
I use credit suisse, but UBS is pretty much the same. Good Luck and welcome for when you turn up!

Hi Nick,
I am curious to know which bank you finally chose.
I am in your same situation, moving to Geneva tomorrow after a long pause of 11 years... I had UBS and Postfinance.I never considered Migros, but some comments in this thread made me think about it. I want my bank account to be not expensive, allow me to do savings with interesting interest rates, and give me a card (credit or debit) which I can easily use when I go out shopping.
