NEW YORK CITY : Williamsburg VS Astoria

Hello Glocals friends!

I am going to work 6 months in NYC at the Swiss Consulate located 2 blocks away from  Grand Central. My question is the following, which city between Williamsburg and Astoria, is the quickest train ride to Grand Central???

i would suggest looking into long island city, not far from astoria. it's very easy to access and much more affordable rental fees.

I'd say Williamsburg and Astoria are about equidistant to GCS. Both trips require a connection to the 4/5/6 (take the 4 or 5, which are express). I agree with Amaraya, though: you might want to consider other options. Long Island City is cheap and well connected and would get you to GCS in three stops (2 in queens, and one from 59th to 42nd on the express). If your budget isn't very tight, you might also consider LES/East Village, which could get you up to GCS on the 4/5/6 in no time at all. Message me if you have more questions, and good luck!

My budget is tight, 300-750 a month, the consulate only pays me 1500, and i thought my country (Switzerland) was among the richest in the world..what a shame. But thanks for the information on Williamsburg! I hear it's upcoming neighborhood but if the transportation sucks, it s gonna be a pain in the ass!

Unless you find a place within walking distance (which for that price and so quickly is unlikely), choosing based on estimated time of travel may not be wise. Rather, check out the apartments, room-mates & neighborhood, give yourself generally 40 mins to get to work and test ride the route. Williamsburg WAS up-and-coming, in the sense that five years ago it was the 'hipster' place to be- young artists and freelancers moved into neighborhoods that were mainly Polish closer to Queens and Hispanic towards the south (now more and more gentrified). LIC was not a very livable area until recently (it where they drop of ex-cons, but that said I've seen some great apartments there and they've done much development lately). Astoria had a strong Greek community towards the north, and tends to have decent apartments and is maybe a little 'quieter' (more mature?) than Williamsburg. Sunnyside and Woodside are off the 7 train- an easy commute for you- and have a mix of Irish, Central & South American, and Korean family-oriented communities. Affordable, but you will probably go out in the city or in Brooklyn, not that part of Queens.

you've seen www.mta.info for transport?

Yes, I know MTA and I'm shocked when I think that I'm gonna have to pay 89 usd a month for transportation.

Anyway, thanks to all for all your advices, I found a temporary place for 2 weeks in williamsburg, that'll give me the time to go visit basically everything I can afford in queens and brooklyn cuz unfortunately, money remains the number one factor.
