Skiing near Geneva with kids(5 & 7) all of us r first timers
Hi All,
I am new to Geneva,Glocals and skiing as well. So thanks for reading my post and any advice will be much appreciated.
My wife & kids(5 & 7) will be joining between 20th Dec and 2 Jan. I am looking to spend some time(3-4 days) skiing and just doing some outdoor activities with them near Geneva. The places should be accessible by public transport. Will the places be open over the Christmas period?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,

Suleman

Chamonix and nearby areas are good. Can be reached by public transport. Buses leave for Chamonix regularly from Gare Routiere on Place Dorciere (near Cornavin, off rue du mont-blanc). You are there in about 90 minutes... nice drive. Take your passports to cross the French/Swiss border.

Another option is the canton of Valais (Zermatt, Verbier, Crans-Montana, etc). Lots of good skiing, Zermatt is my personal favorite.

Interlaken, Spiez, Gstaad, Davos, St Moritz, Klosters are other options... some can seem garish, and also a bit far by public transport.

Hi there

December is the start of the season and we can never quite tell how the snow will develop before christmas. However, the early signs are promising so it should be possible for you to find somewhere to ski and enjoy the snow!

The general rule is, the higher the resort, the more snow you have. However, with height you also get colder and harsher conditions (not so good for kids), plus generally more expensive for lift passes and generally a bit harder to get to the resort. So maybe you could consider a few places like those below, all have beginner slopes, childrens activities and teachers for skiing lessons:

- Chamonix, accessible by bus from geneva, has several ski areas (some higher than others so it offers a good choice), lots of hotels for 3/4 nights, mixture of english and french.

- Avoriaz, accessible by bus from geneva, the village is high up so you stay in the mountain resort which is quite exciting, or you can stay lower in the valley in morzine and take the telecabine up each morning.

- Les Carroz, bus from geneva, smaller resort with a much more french feel. Lovely food in the restaurants and more like a village. It is a bit lower than Chamonix and Avoriaz so you need to check the snow conditions to make sure it is open.

- Les Contamines, similar to Les Carroz...

- Verbier, much more glitzy resort with high skiing and glamorous clientelle! You can get there by train and take a lift up the mountain (takes over half an hour in the bubble lift!) Or you can do a transfer bus from Martigny train station as it is easier if you have luggage. Beginner slopes are not sooo good as other places, this is really an intermediate / advanced place but in case you are after glamour too!

- Crans Montana, Zermatt, La Plagne, Les Arcs, Meribel, Val D'isere etc.. all great resorts but all over two hours away so I have not mentioned.

Let me know if you need any more info, happy skiing!
