Suggestions for a trip in New England and Maine?

Hello! I am thinking to go to US at the end of September for 2 or 3 weeks. The trip should be NYC-> Boston-> Portland and trip through Maine. I heard about the fantastic fall foliage in Maine. Has anybody seen that? Is beginning of October too early or already a good time?

October is a perfect time of year for the changing of the leaves and it should still be pretty warm..

Eat lots of Crab Cakes in Maine =)

We stayed in New London, New Hampshire in early October one year. The colours were absolutely fantastically beautiful. Warm sunny days but the evenings tended to be cool. There is lots to do in this area, not just countryside and nature. We loved it! People are friendly too.

One thing that perplexed us [coming originally from UK], everywhere we went, we saw signs saying "Mums on the lawn, Mums in the shop, Mums on the shelf". Couldn't understand what this meant as to us Mum is mother. Finally dawned on us that it was short for Chysanthemums - maybe too difficult for them to spell in full?

I'm from the white mountains in NH. I highly recommend doing a drive over the Kancamangus Highway- it runs from Lincoln, NH to North Conway, NH and it's absolutely gorgeous.

Also, taking a ferry from Portland, ME to any of the Islands off the coast is always fun. and the drive up Rte 1 from Portland through Rockland is always beautiful.

Hope you have a great trip.
