Hi Charlotte.
Check out http://newyork.craigslist.org/ for sublets. Or if you want to rent a furnished apartment from a legit company and not a person try http://www.owrelocation.com/temp_housing.php. I usually stay with them when I visit the city.
Have fun!

If you end up looking at hotels, don't limit yourself to Manhattan. To save money, consider:
- New Jersey, near a station for the train that goes straight to Penn Station and Wall Street on (15-minute train ride to Manhattan).
- Brooklyn: if you're near the right subway station there you can be all over Manhattan in 20-30 minutes.

I was in NYC this summer and I used air bnb... wonderful experience: cheap (well, compared to hotel prices of course), you get to know the way locals live, and you can stay in a non-touristic area, which is also kind of nice.. Would definitely recommend it!

I know fabrizio mentioned this already but Air bnb is a great option. That's what my friend did once. You can just sublet a room in brooklyn for probably as little as $25/ night or an entire studio in soho or west village, which are majorly expensive in case you don't know, for about $120/night. And unlike craigslist you don't have to worry about it being a scam. Do a bit more research but I believe the website company will pay you back in case apt owner scams you. And you can read reviews from people who have previously stayed there.
