Hiking, best ones close to Zurich, Zug, Lucerne (and guide books)

Whole BOOKS can be written on this topic, but I'd like to hear what hikes people have particularly enjoyed.  I'd also like to know if there are any good guide books (in English).

Of course, if there are people who want to go hiking, let's make that happen, as well.

Hi Alan,

You can pick up some free small guidebooks from the train station in Zug, inside the tourism office. Some of them have hiking trails listed with sightings. In particular I like to take the cable car up to Zugerberg (you get there with bus 11) and then pick a route to walk back down. Of course, let's hope the weather will get better soon, otherwise it won't be as fun.

weather is supposed to be beautiful this weekend.  I plan to do Pilatus or the Rigi.  Something like that.  I have a little bit of a groin strain, probably from walking quickly to the bakery to get a pastry.

I'm not kidding.

took a hike in the hills above Aegeri.  Incredible views.  Difficult (for me), but not too tiring for the two women with me.  They are STUDS!!  Check out the Einseldn hike on the front page.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, and it should get me in hiking shape.  I hope!!

Gday Alan

There is a Wanderkarte for the region around Zug which gives you a pretty good idea of hikes. Unfortunately the Swiss, having been born with size 0 hiking boots already fitted, seem to be out in force on the days that I like to go out (Sat and Sun). The best hiking we have done has been in the area around Poschiavo. Well worth a look for a weekend.

Meant to say hi before, we lived in Baar for 5 years before emigrating up the hill to Neuheim.

Hope to meet up with you sometime, if Cheda ever organises another get together perhaps there......

regards

Martin

I'm not surprised. My apetite is huge after hiking. Food tastes delicious after you do your walking:)

I can recommend you some websites with good hike descriptions and routes.

http://www.wandersite.ch/def_english.html

http://www.tourenguide.ch/d/home/index.php

For a hiking book .- go to Orell Fuessli book shop and they have many and different books. I use mostly the books from the " Rother Wanderführer" or "Wanderwelt" - both are in German ( my German is perfect, so no problem for me). For books in Eglish, just ask the book sellers.

Books for snow-shoe hikes available online:

Switzerland is the perfect place for hiking and mountain outdoor sports. You just need to discover it :-) ! Enjoy !
