A summer hike towards the Gypsum pyramids above Villars
Saturday, June 23rd, 2018 @ 10:30
Bretaye above Villars NOT IN, Lausanne
This lovely hike will take us from Bretaye above Villars through meadows and fields to the scenic Ensex pasture before reaching the La Croix pass and its amazing gypsum pyramids.
Over time, water and wind have eroded sedimentary geological structures, creating impressive pyramids. These majestic gypsum pyramids of karstic origin testify to the history of this unspoilt natural area near the La Croix pass.
The path will then take us through the Encrène pass before reaching the Perche pasture. From that point on, cows, and a groundhog or two will be our companions as we walk down towards the lake Les Chavonnes.
Heading back down to Bretaye we will see the Black lake as well as the Bretaye lake nestled in a mountainous amphitheatre.
Specifics:
12 km in length
Upward/downward: 560 m / 560 m
We will have our picnics on the shores of the lake Les Chavonnes where the most adventurous of us can go for a dip or even a swim. Perhaps we will glimpse the treasure supposedly hidden in the lake by lady Isabeau. According to a legend, she was metamorphosed into a fairy and has never stopped watching over her treasure.
We can carpool should enough drivers sign up, otherwise we will take the train leaving Lausanne at 8:21-arriving in Aigle at 8:53, in Villars at 9:33 by bus and in Bretaye at 10:18 by train again.
