Fossil collecting in Liesberg (also for children)
Sunday, June 30th, 2013 @ 10:00
Liesberg, Basel
The Book and Movie Jurassic Park was named after the Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago, which itself was named after the Jura Mountains, which start not too far from Basel.
Liesberg, a small village south of Basel, has a quarry where fossils can be found. Sadly, one can't find any dinosaurs there, but there are plenty of Ammonoidea, Sea urchins (at least parts of), fossilised plants and shells. More info here:

Best time is in the morning (at least in summer) before it gets too hot. Bring heavy duty clothing and a set of clean clothes. Water and sunscrean are highly recommended. Some band-aids too.
This site shows possible tools, I never used a helmet though:

Children can also collect fossils, but one to two hours are enough (also for most adults to be honest). This visit can be easily combined with a shot hike and the roasting of some sausages and cold beer ;)
It is best to go there by car. Either meet there directly at 10:30 or in Basel, corner Gartenstrasse / St. Jakobs-Strasse (where the busses meet, behind the UBS building) at 10:00.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bring your own equipment/tools and (if you want to ride in my car) a second pair of shoes.
My mobile number is 076 570 79 74
The timeframe is about two to three hours.
