Hi Alison,
self-raising flour - farine de blé avec poudre levante
castor sugar - sucre en poudre
confectioner's sugar - sucre glace
I hope this helps. I also love baking and have a baking business in geneva called Sweet Ideas. I will send you the website if you are interested.
Good luck with you baking!!!
Regards,
Michelle

Hi Alison,
My German is not so good, but I think you would be looking for
Weizen Mehl mit Backpulver
Puderzucker
but the best is probably to find an aisle with cooking ingredients in Migros or Coop and have fun trying to figure out which one is which... ;-)
Experimenting with different ingredients is part of the fun in cooking... :-)
Good luck!

from what i have seen in shops, self raising flour is not available in switzerland. however, you can find it over the border in france.
cream of tartar is an acid and it is often used as a major component in baking powder, combined with baking soda to react when the mixture is moistened to ensure that baked goods will rise well. you can use baking soda in the flour to make it rise if you can't find self raising flour. however, do not add yeast in this case.
baking is as close to chemistry as you can come out side the lab. maybe that's why in french they call the baking area of a bakery, the "laboratoir"

also: In some situations, vinegar can be substituted for cream of tartar, although there is no exact substitute for the powder. This can be done when beating egg whites or making meringue, and it can also be done in a baking recipe that calls for separate measures of cream of tartar and baking soda

Hi Alison. You don't need to buy self-raising flour, you can make it from regular white flour, just follow the formula: for each cup of all-purpose flour, add 1 1/4 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
Good luck!

Note: Cream of tartar can not be found in grocery stores.... but it can be foudn in pharmacies. Go to your local pharmacy and chances are they will have it... around Christmas lots of them were sold out, so visit a couple of different pharmacies before giving up.

Thanks, guys! I am in the German speaking part of Switzerland, but I will look for these ingredients here and see what I find.
