I know that almost everyone knows that Au Vieux Carouge is one of the best fondue places in the city, but I just have to write about it. After a few months of fondue, you grow kind of weary of the whole fondue thing (Fondue AGAIN? Can my body really take any more cheese???). But inevitably, a visitor comes into town, and you HAVE to go to a fondue place because it's the most Swiss thing to do and the visitor won't leave until they get some.
So you go to Au Vieux Carouge. And while you're there, you remember why their fondue is so good. The consistency is amazing -- no little pools of oil on top of the cheese here. The cheese is so flavorful, not a bland pond of anonymous fromage. And the tomato fondue. Oh my God is that stuff good -- it's like reaching a new plane of fondue enlightenment.
Halfway through the meal, you look across the table at your out-of-town visitor, who is actually speechless AND getting teary-eyed because the food is so good, and you know that yes, Au Vieux Carouge was the right choice.
