Berlin

Leaving for Berlin next Monday afternoon for 5 days.

Is there anything we simply must not miss? Have heard that the Jewish Museum in Potsdam is remarkable, if sobering. Any other thoughts? We have rented an apartment in the centre so aim to travel by U-Bahn. Thanks everyone!!

Sheila,

I would recommend not to miss

-East Side Gallery

-Museen Inseln

-Ägyptisches museum (Egyptian Museum)

-Holocaust memorial

-Reichstag dome (free, though registration might be required)

-Brandemburg Tür (gate)

Though it certainly depends on what your interests are

If you want to go out in the night (and like electronic music), don't miss the Berghain - and don't be scared of the doorman ;)

other good clubs/bars: Watergate, Sky-Bar

Day: go to the KaDeWe (on the Ku'Damm), very impressing big store (I've never seen a foodcourt like this)

Berlin is such a good city! For an interesting night out check out

http://www.klo.de/

other wise must sees well of course the tv tower, you can miss it, litterally, brandenberg gate, ddr museum is very interesting and worth a look as is the berlin wall museum and check point charlie.

if you wanted a day trip somewhere pop on the train to Dresden and give that a look.  The tourist bus is best way to see it all in a day.

Enjoy!

I confirm, you need to register online 24 hours before your visit of the Reichstag Dome, it's great stuff! do it! The TV tower is cool too! great view from the top!

The Jewish Museum had an intersting architecture which you'll be told on and on if you take the audio guide which quite frankly, speaks more about the building than the jews themselves. I found the visit super boring.

Thank you very much for all your contributions. We have done research on the internet of course but your added thoughts were all very welcome, even if we are "of a certain age" so the night-life would not interest us to the same extent as for younger people. But thank you all for being friendly and helpful.

You can do many of the above by takind the public bus 100 (stop in front of the Berlin Dom). About 3 EUR.

Also not to miss: The museum at ex Checkpoint Charlie (subway stop)
http://www.mauermuseum.de/english/frame-index-mauer.html

Hackesche Höfe (S-Bahn stop), an impressive old Berlin backyard building line:

And also a must: Chateau Sans Soucis in Potsdam (can be reached by S Bahn)

and nearby Wannsee (THE Berlin lake)

If you are at the Brandenburg gate walk over to the nearby Potsdamer Platz (the former no man's land) passing by the Holocaust memorial.

The Reichstag and famous Friedrichstraße are not far.

That's a great place!  A friend told me they have delicious lemon feta cheese there.

The tea house it next to the place where they rebuild the Berlin Stadtschloss (the former German Emperors' castle), Berlin Dom and the Pergamon Museum.

All very historical and interesting in the area as it was the former "Eastern" part of Berlin.
