Credit Card Fraud

Hi all

Just a note to server as a warning to all those people who make transactions online via a credit card. My wife and I have been back in Geneva for 5 months from Australia and last night to our horror discovered that some scumbag in Australia maxed out our dredit card to the tune of $30k AUS. Now I am from an IT background and and reasonably savvy when it comes to keeping my laptop scanned and secure etc but somehow our CC details have been got from somewhere and the only logical place is online. I, like others have regularly pruchased online but mainly thru reputable merchants such as Paypal, Itunes Amazon etc but it seems that people have ways of getting this info. We have obviously called our bank (card is cancelled now)  and the Aust Police but are not hopeful of any solution other than to cease any further online purchases. I am going to get my computer independently verified just to make sure it has not been compromised.

So be warned people it can happen even if you take all the precautions. All we have is the knowledge that some low life is currently parading around Sydney in some beautful jewellery and lounging on some expensvie furniture. !!!!

Cheers

Sorry to hear about your problems.

First thought is that 30k is a lot for a credit card max, if it had been say 3k or 5k this would have limited your losses. Isn't it the case though that if you contest credit card purchases, the credit card company is responsible and has to bear the losses, not you?

I'm guessing that maybe you used a public wifi connection to make purchases whilst in Oz. I believe it's technically possible to listen in to such wifi connections as they are not usually secured. The solution is to use a VPN.

Another possibility is that your PC has an undetected virus or trojan.

On the other hand, your cc details may simply have been passed on by an unscrupulous retailer or restaurant.

Its very important which country and or bank you have your credit card from.

For example all credit cards in UK are automatically protected for unlimited amount for abuse online as its required by the law.

In some other places you have to purchase a special insurance and it even has a limit.

I have now a card from my French bank which has special online protection that comes with it.

I also believe my UBS credit card allows me to dispute payments.
