Discussions - the point of it .... ?

I'm interested to hear opinions about the motivations to participate in discussions. There are plenty I can think of - I'd like to know the ones I don't think of.

How do all of you explain, for what reason do we all participate in discussions, here at glocals ?

Many discussions seem rather pointless, since people with very opposite opinions participate, and the discussions sometimes are about matters as serious as religious beliefs and matters of taste, which is -we can all agree on that ?- not to discuss.

Why do ppl do it anyways ?

It seems obvious that an atheist won't convince a true believer, Jew, Christian or Muslim, that there is no God.

Neither will a devoted Christian convince a true Atheist to start to believe ...

Still, some posts seems truely serious, trying to achieve things like that, trying to change the believes and attitudes of ppl (not only religiuos ones).

Some posts become really personal, ppl start lashing out and judge others, more or less directly by choosing agressive language or condescending wording, claiming 3 posts later however "Absolutely, I respect other opinions !"

I participated myself enough in discussions, put up posts that are more or less serious, and started wondering - why ? Sometimes, sure, to provoke. But what's the point of it ?

What do I, we, actually try to achieve ? Just exchange of opinions ?

So, let's have it, what do you guys think ?

(If you may - please hold back the mocking posts like "what ? you don't know why you do it ? How dumb are you ?"  until we have a few seriuos answers, please ? The thread will deteriorate to a farce soon enough - as most do ;-P)

just a few reasons

for the lolz

to pass some dead time

to get across an egotistical point

to try and convert people to your point of view

there's two kind of discussions : the serious, where I participate if I believe I can bring something interesting (which isn't usually the case)

and the absolutely pointless where I just want to get some attention or crack a joke that no one will understand.

I agree.

Some stuff are really fun and/or interesting to read other stuff pretty provocative and/or appalling... before you know it your brain starts formulating a reply...

A thread rarely goes where expected... in fact sometimes it can go pretty wild but I guess that's all part of the fun Wink

Drew, you've got a great sense of humour! Your threads are always funny. Last one was too. Don't worry about some of the reactions, they were probably just the result of a bad mood. Who knows the state of mind of some people behind their computers...Sealed
